Dear document savers,

It appears that due dates for assignments makes Word eat documents.

Like others I have a corrupted .docx document.  I have tried every trick in the book I can find and am now resorting to the next level of knowledgeable help.

The document crashed whilst working on a formula around the 3rd last page from memory (page 12 I believe).  After waiting etc. I closed and reopened the document and found then that it would go crazy when I got to the area I was last working in, and wouldn't scroll or display content properly.  When I tried again to close and open it wouldn't open it.  Nothing so far has worked.

It now gives the message:

"The file Assign 3 Answers.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."

"Details"

"Unspecified Error"

"Location: Part: /word/document.xml, line: 2, column: 0"

I can open in Googledocs but without drawings or equations.  It opens in viewer.zoho.com but still cannot open a saved copy in Word 2010

I would greatly appreciate if anyone had any fixes for me.

The Google Docs copy was a DOC rather than a DOCX, but I downloaded it and had a look. I snipped out the  BH  from the second formula following "for Triangle CBH" on page 19. That will need replacing and close proofreading that area is highly recommended.

                  

There is some strange pagination and I don't know exactly why that is nor even if the pagination is intentional.  The actual corruption looked like it was due to many reformatting changes, resulting in empty formatting tags.

I've uploaded a repaired copy of the DOCX to my SkyDrive here for you to download . Be sure to get service packs for Office 2007 or 2010 installed whenever possible before further editing is performed.

    I have Word 2013. If I use the Open and Repair choice accessible from the drop down arrow on the Open button of the Open Dialogue Window, the file opens right up. There is one more error about not having the right converter, which I just ignored and told it to open the file. See the images below:

    You can download two version of the repaired file below. If the DOCX version won't open for you because say you are using Word 2007 and it finds a Word 2013 document faulty for some reason, try the DOC version. I have uploaded both to DropBox. Apparently in the DOC version the equations are converted to images and can no longer be edited:

    Lastly, the issue probably arose because of editing of equations. I would suggest that each time you edit an equation henceforth, that you also save to a backup file. Also save to a local desktop/laptop/tablet, if the main copy is on a memory stick.

    Jeeped does usually respond here too pretty quickly. maybe he can confirm my responses as he is the top expert here.

    One further note: the repaired version apparently also does not open up except if you choose open and repair explicitly. So the document does have to be repaired or at least cycled through a DOC version. If you cycle through the DOC version and want to recreate the formulas, then you will have to copy and past from a DOCX version opened through Open and Repair, however that is likely to also not fix the bad equation. Maybe Jeeped can look at the XML for the equations and find the bad XML. My free program will not repair a file if it opens initially with Open and Repair, which is a fault...

    If Jeeped doesn't respond in time, also try 3ICEhere at another Microsoft forum.He also does free fixing of DOCX files with equation problems.

    Her e's my advice for recovering previous versions of files:

    • Right clicking on the file in Explorer (or My Computer), choosing "Properties", then the "Previous versions" tab if you have it and finally clicking on a found earlier version of the file and the "Restore" button. If you have Vista Home Basic or Premium, you probably won't have this choice on your right click menu unless if you are using it in a school or business and the IT department has turn on the feature at the server. Sometimes they even turn on Previous Version Recovery for their XP Pro machines although I'm not sure the two pieces of freeware that follow would work the same way as the previous versions are probably store on the server.
    • If you have Vista Home Basic or Premium the previous versions of the files might still be there as Restore Point snapshots on your hard drive and you can use the freeware Shadow Explorer, http://www.shadowexplorer.com/, to find out.
    • Also I just released a freeware program that also recovers previous versions from the same source as Shadow Explorer. You can get it here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vistaprevrsrcvr/. It might be easier to use than Shadow Explorer.

    • http://www.piriform.com/recuva - The freeware Recuva, which is excellent.
    • http://www.recovermyfiles.com/ -  RecoverMyFiles is an excellent commercial program. Try the demo first.
    • http://www.dposoft.net/word.html - Word Regenerator, as far I know this program works like the two above programs but specializes in finding Word file like structures and is also commercial like RecoverMyFiles. I don't know if it is more effective or than Recuva and RecoverMyFiles. Try the trial first.
    • http://www.pcinspector.de/Default.htm?language=1 - PC Inspector File Repair may work like the three pieces of software above and is also freeware like Recuva. However it only works on doc, xls and ppt files not docx, xlsx or pptx.
