Unspecified Error, word/document.xml, Line:2, Column: 0

Dear document savers,

It appears that due dates for assignments makes Word eat documents.

Like others I have a corrupted .docx document.  I have tried every trick in the book I can find and am now resorting to the next level of knowledgeable help.

The document crashed whilst working on a formula around the 3rd last page from memory (page 12 I believe).  After waiting etc. I closed and reopened the document and found then that it would go crazy when I got to the area I was last working in, and wouldn't scroll or display content properly.  When I tried again to close and open it wouldn't open it.  Nothing so far has worked.

It now gives the message:

"The file Assign 3 Answers.docx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."

"Details"

"Unspecified Error"

"Location: Part: /word/document.xml, line: 2, column: 0"

I have uploaded the file here

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8CyUQXlwkYeUXdmVl9acWZTUEU

I can open in Googledocs but without drawings or equations.  It opens in viewer.zoho.com but still cannot open a saved copy in Word 2010

I would greatly appreciate if anyone had any fixes for me.

Sincerely,

Rowan

... https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8CyUQXlwkYeUXdmVl9acWZTUEU ...

The Google Docs copy was a DOC rather than a DOCX, but I downloaded it and had a look. I snipped out the  BH  from the second formula following "for Triangle CBH" on page 19. That will need replacing and close proofreading that area is highly recommended.

There is some strange pagination and I don't know exactly why that is nor even if the pagination is intentional.  The actual corruption looked like it was due to many reformatting changes, resulting in empty formatting tags.

I've uploaded a repaired copy of the DOCX to my SkyDrive here for you to download . Be sure to get service packs for Office 2007 or 2010 installed whenever possible before further editing is performed.

I've found four problems in two areas and they looked like the use of formulas was fouling them up. a minor amount of content was lost.

    1. I had to remove まえ and 前 from the table containing "マナさんは 日本ごを べんきょうしてから、日本へ 来ました" on page 45 (of 107).
    2. i had to remove い and 言 from the table containing "The action represented by V2 occurs..." on page 47 (of 107).

Those two areas need to be examined closely for content loss and formatting.

I've uploaded the repaired DOCX to my SkyDrive here for your reference and download.

    hello, mr Jeeped,

i've read lots of tutorials about how to repair my docx, but nothing fits.

my document stopped working after i saw the table borderlines in light blue and dashed (initially transparent) and i decided to save the file and exit. after that, i wanted to check if it opened but it wouldn't. i was using formulas because i thought it's easier than inserting shapes and text boxes.

i don't care about the ending format, but could you please help me with my document also?

You had a formula that had no characters. I would suppose that the formula was removed with <backspace> or something similar. I removed the paragraph start and stop XML tags that were noting the empty formula.

You should proofread 2.9.2 Antenna Array Gain Measurement starting on page 31 carefully. I do not believe any content was lost, but I never saw the original document.

The repaired DOCX is on my SkyDrive here.

    Jeeped,

This paper is my Masters Thesis in its infancy. I have been working on this all day today, and create backup files every couple of nights, but have done extensive work on it since I created a backup file.

Jeeped will have to take care of the file structure problem. Here is some information that will help reduce the impact of this type of problem in the future.

You already identified the key problem with your current "backup plan" (I use the phrase VERY loosely).  Simply put, you are doing it manually and wait too long between backups.  A thesis is a high value document, VERY high value to your <grin>.  Instead, you should rely on automation to do it more frequently.

Here is a collection of tools that I've encountered that will do "automated" save as backups for you in various ways. Some are free, some a paid and some are DIY.  But they all will do the backups without your intervention. So the next time, and there will be, this happens, you can fall back to a backup version of the file that is only several minutes, or tens of minutes old. Not DAY or DAYS old!  That is a lot less painful.

    True Autosave Macros for Office

This file you are working on is HIGH VALUE (to you). You MUST take extra steps to protect the time and creativity you have invested in this file. You MUST make frequent backups.

A good general rule for backups is:

Remember 3-2-1 to have good backups --

    ·         at least 3 copies of any file,

    ·         at least 2 different storage mediums (say on a hard drive, thumb drive, DVD or the cloud),

    ·         at least 1 copy offsite -- in case of fire etc!  (say thumb drive or DVD moved to different location, or the cloud)

    Steve Gibson

PS: yes “correct” the plural of medium is media, but I don’t speak latin! <grin>

You can do your backups manually or make use of automated tools.  A strategy I have used is timed backups during the editing session (5 minute). Then the final end of day save is copied to second medium. I rotate the "second" medium with an Offsite copy.  Once a week I go in and clean up the 5 minute incremental backups to keep just the end of day copy (to free up space!)

I have used the "autohistory" tool at codeplex. It is easy to use, but like any automated process it uses up a lot of space.

Unfortunately, although Office apps have been around since the the mid 1980’s, MS has not figured out that we need a good “Autosave” backup feature. In the past there was a “versions” feature in some office apps, but it only kept incremental copies of files, not full files. Win7 has a file “versions” feature, but it is tied into “System Recovery Points”. Not very useful.  The following links tell how to setup macros that run automatically and use SAVEAS to save full copies of the file with the date/time included in the file name. You have to manually delete the “extra” backup files, but you control the process rather than Windows or Office. It is a bit more work, but I find it worth it for very important files that are changing frequently.

You have to the option of creating a single “universal” backup location.  The History is located in a NEW GROUP on the View Tab.

    Timed Automatic backup Word documents

    http://www.gmayor.com/automatically\_backup.htm

Graham has created an addin that does something MS should have done 20+ years ago.

    <snip>

Contrary to popular opinion, Word has no integral means of automatically saving the current document, nor of backing-up the current document. What it does have is an option to save AutoRecover information after a specific and configurable interval and an option to save a backup copy of the previously saved version of the document with the default file extension of WBK (and although there is no reason to do so, Word also allows the option to change this extension to the user's choice). This is not a true backup in as much as it is not a copy of the current version of the document.

A function to create a true automatic backup is provided by the **Save In Two Places add-in which is detailed in a separate page**, There is also available from this web site a complementary add-in which provides numbered versions of a document. **Again that has its own web page.**

    Saving Everything Macros

Summary: Need to force users to save their work? It may be as simple as implementing an AutoNew() to force every new file to have a filename, and an AutoClose() to save the current document BEFORE closing. It could, however, also have something to do with training users.

Have you ever closed Word after making a bunch of changes, and then accidently clicked ‘No' when asked if you want to save your changes?  Then you suddenly realized what you have done, only to find that there was no way to recover your work?  You are not alone.  In fact, so many people were in similar situations that we improved Office 2010 so you can get that document back!  We call this feature Versions and I would like to spend a little time introducing it to you.

Although using the cloud does not inherently include timed backup, it does provide a useful backup function. Saving copies to the cloud eliminates the danger of losing your physical local copies, ie losing a HD or USB Thumb drive.
