Visio 2013 VERY slow

Absolutely same symptoms on different machines in any variations of x32 and x64 OS and Visio editions. This is not hardware or OS issue, the problem is definitely in Visio 2013 code.

Microsoft, your coders did something wrong in Visio 2013 and it seems the issue is in pre-rendering.

I'm running Visio 2013 on my Windows 8 laptop (Thinkpad x220t). As suggested by Adushey, I created a Network diagram with over 20 shapes. Pan and zoom has been pretty snappy.

 

If you can share the following info (observed when you find Visio running slow), it should help the team investigate.

1. Visio RAM usage (in MB as well as % of total RAM)
2. CPU usage - Visio and all other programs
3. Were there any other graphic intensive software running simultaneously?
4. Are you projecting your laptop to an external monitor?

1. With a 2.96mb diagram open, which is populated with many connection points and stencils, it is using 200mb RAM (10%).

2) http://i.rideekulo.us/visio-cpu-usage.png  The 'spikes' near the right of the graph are from visio opening the document and me zooming in.

3. No, just Outlook and a browser, maybe an explorer window or two.
4. Yes, via a VGA cable.  I disconnected it (only laptop display active) and reopened the document, there was no improvement.

When compared to Visio 2010, this 2013 version is extremely less responsive.  Those of us who are overtasked (aren't we all) and strung out on caffeine notice even the smallest amounts of latency (milliseconds).  That being said, being impatient isn't really the case here...  If the same diagram is opened in 2010 on a significantly less powerful laptop (even with more programs open), there is absolutely no issue at all.  It is very snappy and responsive.

I am having the same experience...  I'm big on shortcuts and being able to maneuver quickly and efficiently.  I mainly build network diagrams (L2 & L3) in large formats (ISO A1, A0) and I've found that using the SHIFT and CTRL keys combined with the mouse wheel is very effective, however in 2013 it loads so slow that it defeats the purpose.

I imagine this has something to do with how 2013 is caching the data.  I read another thread that stated to disable hardware acceleration in the Advanced section of the Options in any Office app.  I did this and while it does perform slightly better now, its still not anywhere near how snappy Visio 2010 was.

Hoping for an answer/fix soon.

I'm sure this isn't a machine performance issue as both machines I use for diagramming are pretty powerful.  One is an Alienware laptop (M14x) with an i7 2630QM and 4GB DDR3-1600 RAM with an NVIDIA GT 555M video adapter.  My other is an i7 3770k with 16GB DDR3-1600 RAM and an NVIDIA GTX 680 video card.  Both are running Windows 8 x64 (RTM) with all updates installed, so the issue doesn't seem to be specific to Windows 7.

UPDATE: I have gained a slight performance boost by disabling the "Animate Controls and Elements inside Windows" option in System Properties > Advanced System Settings > Performance Settings.  Still not quite on par with Visio 2010, but we're getting there.

I can't send you the drawing because it is confidential. But its simple to duplicate. Open a simple network diagram, add about 10 devices, put some colors on them, and then try to zoom in/out and pan around. You will see what I am talking about-
