stdole32.tlb in Excel

I am running Windows 8, and I have just reinstalled Office 2007.  When I open Excel, I get a screen that shows stdole32.tlb and then office goes on to configure.  This happens each time I open up Excel.  How do I stop this?  I don't have the regedit function, that I used to have with prior versions of windows.

In addition to Chip's suggestions you may also follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Try the steps mentioned below and check if it helps resolve the issue:

Important: Ensure to back-up the registry before changing the registry keys:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

·         Go to Run (press Windows+R key on the keyboard simultaneously) and type regedit

·         Navigate to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > Excel.Chart.8

·         Right Click on key and select Permissions

·         In the Permission windows > click on Add tab and add Everyone

·         Once this is done, click on the Advanced tab > Owner > highlight Everyone > click on Apply and Ok

·         In the Permission > select Everyone > enable the check box for Full Control and Read then click on Apply and Ok

·         Click on F5 to refresh, this should create a new Sub key below Excel.Chart.8 called Protocol > right click on the key and repeat step 3 – 5.

·         Refresh again and follow the same sequence of steps to add permission to the following Sub keys StdFileEditing >Server.

·         Close the registry editor.

    I have to open in Safe Mode as described by mab4bh above.  Otherwise I suppose you could uninstall and re-install Office 2007, but that's scary as I understand Microsoft may not support 2007 soon - pushing us to buy 2010 version which you much renew annually.  I'll stick with opening Word and Excel in Safe Mode.

    it seems to be something to do with removing a (free) copy of office 2016. My Excel & Word 2007 were working OK until I removed Office 2016 (and used MS's cleanup tool for Office 2016.. which is a lie as it doesn't, left 40+ keys in registry pointing to office 2016)

    HAve removed those, no change. 

    HAve also tried copying the STDOLE32.TLB from a working machine with Off2007 as the date stamps were different. VERY fiddly as you need to play with file ownerships to do this, but this doesn't solve the issue either. Chasing the GUIDs through the registry, is it possible that QUERY.DLL has been changed by off2016?

    Although I can live with the error message, like many others, it would be nice to get rid of it,  there has to be some reason why it's flagged as wrong or whatever the reason is. 

    I don't want to upgrade to Off2010 or later as 2007 does more than I need,to upgrade would be like changing car to a sports car or similar, something with features I won't use so why have to apy for it.

    The other answer of course is LibreOffice, but I can't manage the macro language

    I found the error message and the constant wait while EXCEL "configured" that I gave up and removed Office 2007 and reinstalled it.  Long process, after which I had to redo all my personalisation,  but it did work.   No doubt my registry is totally over cluttered.

    Microsoft really should do better.

    Not sure why future withdrawal of support makes an uninstall/reinstall today more scary.  Can you explain?
