stdole32.tlb in Excel

I am running Windows 8, and I have just reinstalled Office 2007.  When I open Excel, I get a screen that shows stdole32.tlb and then office goes on to configure.  This happens each time I open up Excel.  How do I stop this?  I don't have the regedit function, that I used to have with prior versions of windows.

In addition to Chip's suggestions you may also follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Try the steps mentioned below and check if it helps resolve the issue:

Important: Ensure to back-up the registry before changing the registry keys:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

·         Go to Run (press Windows+R key on the keyboard simultaneously) and type regedit

·         Navigate to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > Excel.Chart.8

·         Right Click on key and select Permissions

·         In the Permission windows > click on Add tab and add Everyone

·         Once this is done, click on the Advanced tab > Owner > highlight Everyone > click on Apply and Ok

·         In the Permission > select Everyone > enable the check box for Full Control and Read then click on Apply and Ok

·         Click on F5 to refresh, this should create a new Sub key below Excel.Chart.8 called Protocol > right click on the key and repeat step 3 – 5.

·         Refresh again and follow the same sequence of steps to add permission to the following Sub keys StdFileEditing >Server.

·         Close the registry editor.

    Can you be more specific on the steps/clicks you did after you ran that link for older Win versions? You originally said "Click on Run programs made for previous versions of windows....and follow instructions !!" but there were multiple links to choose from once it was started...

    When I clicked the link "run previous......." it opened up a "program compatibility troubleshooter" window. I just clicked NEXT and it just started doing its stuff. Nothing more.

    I picked the link for Office 2007 as that is where we are having the problem.  After it was done it said one thing was corrected.

    I picked the link for Office 2007 as that is where we are having the problem.  After it was done it said one thing was corrected.

    When I click the link, Program Compatibility Troubleshooter opens...there is a link for Advanced... I just hit the Next button... it starts detecting issues, it stops with a list of programs... I highlight Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and click Next button... it tries detecting issues and stops saying a paid upgrade is available... I click Continue troubleshooting the program... It opens a box with 2 options:

    Try recommended settings

    Troubleshoot program

     I click troubleshoot program... a new window opens with 4 checkboxes:

    The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now

    The program opens but doesn't display properly

    The program requires additional permissions

    I don't see my problem listed

    Did you click the first choice or last choice?

    I click the first choice and the Next button...

    It asks which version of Windows did it work on before and I choose Win 8... A "Test compatibility settings for the program" window opens with a button for "Test the program..."

    YOU have 2 choices:

    You can click the button, OR

    You can click the Next button

    I click the test button...

    The blue header box with "Do you want this app to make changes to your device?" for Microsoft Office Excel to run with Yes/No buttons, you choose Yes...

    The Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 Configuration box opens and runs with a green status bar... it does its stuff like always and almost a minute later an Excel spreadsheet opens.

    I close it, wait 30 seconds and click the Excel link pinned in the Quick Access taskbar to run Excel and:

    It brings up the  blue header box with "Do you want this app to make changes to your device?" for Microsoft Office Excel to run with Yes/No buttons AGAIN!!! Clicking Yes brings up the Configuration box with the status bar AGAIN!

    Is this what's happening to anybody??
