stdole32.tlb in Excel

I am running Windows 8, and I have just reinstalled Office 2007.  When I open Excel, I get a screen that shows stdole32.tlb and then office goes on to configure.  This happens each time I open up Excel.  How do I stop this?  I don't have the regedit function, that I used to have with prior versions of windows.

In addition to Chip's suggestions you may also follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

Try the steps mentioned below and check if it helps resolve the issue:

Important: Ensure to back-up the registry before changing the registry keys:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Back-up-the-registry

·         Go to Run (press Windows+R key on the keyboard simultaneously) and type regedit

·         Navigate to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > Excel.Chart.8

·         Right Click on key and select Permissions

·         In the Permission windows > click on Add tab and add Everyone

·         Once this is done, click on the Advanced tab > Owner > highlight Everyone > click on Apply and Ok

·         In the Permission > select Everyone > enable the check box for Full Control and Read then click on Apply and Ok

·         Click on F5 to refresh, this should create a new Sub key below Excel.Chart.8 called Protocol > right click on the key and repeat step 3 – 5.

·         Refresh again and follow the same sequence of steps to add permission to the following Sub keys StdFileEditing >Server.

·         Close the registry editor.

    depending on the features you need I'd check out Libreoffice first.    MS is looking like a protection racket along with Norton etc.

    Dont know how much 2016 is compared to 365 . is it the same thing.   Its Ok if youre a lawyer or similar high income and need it.   Charities and not for profit will find it a big drain on dwindling resources.

    think I've just persuaded myself to go Ubuntu.....

    I followed all the steps meticulously in your post as well as the ones listed in the post you linked.  The problem persists.

    EDIT: Uninstalled Office (not just Excel, but all) and reinstalled.  Works.

    I have to open in Safe Mode as described by mab4bh above.  Otherwise I suppose you could uninstall and re-install Office 2007, but that's scary as I understand Microsoft may not support 2007 soon - pushing us to buy 2010 version which you much renew annually.  I'll stick with opening Word and Excel in Safe Mode.

    Hi

    I tried to follow the steps above but when i clicked on the registry key ending Excel.Chart.8 I was given an error message box saying that an error was preventing it from opening. When I tried to change permissions on it anyway I was told that I couldn't see the permissions but I was able to change them! Then the Permissions box opened and was all blank - no users/administrators. I was unable to save any changes as access was restricted.

    I have tried so many fixes for this problem but nothing is working so far. I hope you can help or point me to someone who can.
