How to display margins in Word 2013

Yes, setting the compatibility option to Word 2010 is file-specific. Of course, you can create a template with the compatibility option set, and then create new documents based on the template.

I've posted a Word 2013 template with this attribute set in the Templates and Documents section of my Downloads page. It has a read-me document that links back to this thread. It's title is "Text Boundaries Template for Word 2013/365."

In fact, I find that Show Text Boundaries do not even show you the page boundaries.  It shows you the top, left and right, however, if you have, say a section break, at the bottom, it will end there, not at your PAGE boundaries.  For instance, my Margins are all 1", and i have a section next page break at 6", and the Show Text Boundaries stop there.  That still is not my page margin.  Very frustrating feature, and all those lines make my eyes go wonky!

Do they ever do any type of updates to fix these things, or will I have to upgrade?

Show text boundaries was never intended by MS to be used to show margins. Upgrading will not help. Word 2013 puts the lines around each paragraph. This will not change according to MS.

I keep this unchecked in all versions.

If you go to my downloads page, you can find a template that lets you have the traditional text boundaries in documents created from it with an explanation. This uses compatibility mode to make Word treat the document as if in Word 2010 which uses the old display engine. You would lose any features new in Word 2013, though, in such a document.

I just upgraded from Word 2007 to Word 2013.  In the 2007 version, I could display the margins but I haven't been able to find how to do that in Word 2013.  Does anyone know?  Clicking on "show text boundaries" seems to put a lot of lines in the document only.

You are like the rest of the informed users of MS Word, prvious to 2013.  While apparently this is a design by MS, no one can tell the users why it was removed.  However, it has been reported the "text boundaries" are not scheduled to return - ever.

Text boundaries were so helpful with envelopes and labels (one person suggested useing borders as labels are technically "tables"), but why need to start something for labels when text boundaries were there all the time with more key strokes!

So I turn on text boundaries when I do labels and envelopes, at least the delivery address box shows up in the envelope template. Yes, it shows up when you click in the area, but ever try to teach this concept to people who have never used an envelope????  Text boundaries take care of all ills!!!!!

We need a whole lot more people to request these get put back, not the ones arounde ever line and/or paragrpah as it is now.

I do wish you much success.  The only work around I know is to save everything as a 97-2003 document, and then you will be able to use text boundaries as well as Word Art which I feel is now a joke!  The older versions for Word Art were much, much, much better!

For labels, turn on the display of Grid Lines via Table Tools>Layout>View Gridlines

With an envelope, the border of the Frame into which the address is inserted is visible when the selection is within that frame.  It helps is you have the display of Non-printing characters turned on so that you can see the paragraph mark (¶) inside the Frame
