I just upgraded from Word 2007 to Word 2013. In the 2007 version, I could display the margins but I haven't been able to find how to do that in Word 2013. Does anyone know? Clicking on "show text boundaries" seems to put a lot of lines in the document only.

No. NOT the RULER. The text boundary feature (not a 'mistake that was never supposed to BE a feature') is more than a century old, far more! It is used by graphic designers to show the outer borders of design elements or, in the case of Microsoft Word, primarily to show the margins of the printable area.
Microsoft FUBARED this 100% and then they LIED ABOUT IT. They hire foreigners who don't speak english as a FIRST language, who are NOT top developers (i.e. they come from foreign THIRD-WORLD COUNTRIES like INDIA) and they do extremely mediocre work.
It's a shame, but what can you expect of low iq GATES? He is no better than Jobs. Jobs at least had a brain but no integrity or ethics.

The word "margins" is being used differently by that article and by the people discussing the topic in this thread.
The article is concerned with showing the areas at the top and bottom of the page, which are hidden when "show white space between pages" is turned off.
This thread is concerned with the dotted lines that surround the page's main text area in all versions before Word 2013, when "show text boundaries" is turned on. Those lines surround every paragraph in Word 2013, making a cluttered distraction and obscuring where the text area begins and ends.
