office 2013 cannot open word files

I have upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 and now I am unable to open .doc files with word 2013 preview. I have uninstalled and installed again but have yet to figure it out.Any help would be great.

Hi Anee,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community. As per the issue description you are unable to open only.DOC file from Word 2013.

I would need more information to assist you with the issue:

  1. Are you able to open files saved in .DOCX format?
  2. The files that you are unable to open, are these files created on the system or did you download these files from internet or emails?

Follow the steps mentioned below and check if it helps:

·         Open Word document.

·         Click on File< Options< Trust Center< Trust Center Settings< Protected View

·         Under Protected View group uncheck all the three options.

·         Click Ok twice. Close and open any Word document and check if it works fine.

    Can you start Word? In that case, there are some troubleshooting steps that you can follow. See https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/921541/how-to-troubleshoot-problems-that-occur-when-you-start-or-use-word.

    If you can't start Word at all, try repairing the installation. Go to https://support.office.com/en-US/Article/Repair-an-Office-application-7821d4b6-7c1d-4205-aa0e-a6b40c5bb88b.

    How can I open a word document as described above, if the problem is I can not open the word documents???

    Try starting Word in Safe Mode by holding down the CTRL key while starting it until asked to confirm that you want to start it in that mode?

    If you can start Word that way, see the section dealing with Add-Ins in the KnowledgeBase article "How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word" at:

    If you cannot start Word that way, then you might remove all traces of the Office installation by downloading the fixit from the following article:

    saving it to your computer and then running it.

    Then reinstall Office by logging into www.office.com/myaccount with your registered email address and click Install Office.

    BEFORE REMOVING THE OFFICE INSTALLATION,  MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO LOG INTO YOUR ACCOUNT AND THAT OFFICE IS ASSOCIATED WITH IT!

    If you actually have Office (locally installed) rather than the subscription version provided through Office 365, then you can't get Office through your Microsoft Account. Instead, see
