I am using the latest Word 2013 RC in German. Allthough I am very pleased with the overall performance and features of this new version, I ran into some very annoying problems, that didn't exist with the latest Word 2010. These should be easy to reproduce: Take a long document (*.docx) with at least 100 pages and try to save it. This takes forever - I can see the progress bar filling up slowly. It takes at least 10-20 seconds to save. During that process I cannot do anything within Word - not even scroll smoothly. It slows down to the point of almost freezing up. I didn't have this problem with Word 2010 on the same system. Take that same document (>100 pages) and try to copy&paste some text (for example out of Firefox) and paste it as plain text - this takes at least 1 to 2 seconds. I didn't have any kind of delay with Word 2010. Word 2013 seems to work ok with *.doc files - it's still slower than Word 2010 a lot faster than saving *.docx files. I have no problems whatsoever with short documents. Can anyone confirm these problems with Word 2013 RC?

Thx for the suggestion but unfortunately this doesn't work for me at all. It doesn't matter if I deactivate the hardware acceleration. As soon as I save my document in *.docx format, it's slow as ever. Seems I am stuck with *.doc for now. In stead of worrying about hardware acceleration, disable options -> advanced -> save -> allow background saves. Afaics, the cause is too low a priority for the background save. Explains also why it's quick when shutting down. Should be a bug with a very easy fix! Jan

The background saves thing really does work, but I'm amazed that now, in late September, this still isn't fixed. 9 months for what must be a tiny issue to fix. For me it happens with any document over 15 pages. 15!! that's so few!

Hello all, My turn! I work as an editor. Right now for no reason that I can determine, Word is RIDICULOUSLY slow whenever I'm operating in Review Mode (track changes, add comments, etc). I'm currently trying to delete extra spaces that were left in the manuscript at the end of sentences here and there, and finding that it takes two or three seconds after hitting the Delete key to see anything happen. If I try to insert a comment, there's this Huuuge delay until the comment window pops out of frame, and then it works normally. "Out of frame" - if you've never done it before, when you're adding comments you have the option to leave edits inline or in balloons off in the margin. Longer comments that take up more tan one line will pop out of the margin into a separate "Comments" window that floats out past the edge of the document itself (I'm not in fullscreen with Word), and until it pops, the lag is horrendous. I disabled hardware acceleration and that helped for writing. I did the registry key thing for the animated text and that helped, for writing. I just did the background save thing and I'm seeing zero difference in the time it takes me to try and revise anything in this document. Suggestions? Most help services only discuss writing, not the review functions in Word, so I've not gotten much help with this anywhere.

However, the only thing that made to problem go away was saving the file as a Word 97 document (.doc) then converting it back to .docx before returning the completed file to the client. I was nervous about possible loss of formatting and issues relating to the clients tables and layout that might have arisen, however, there have been no problems so far.

Hmmm, I'm actually received the manuscript as a .doc file and have been working in Compatibility Mode the entire time. A little nervous about converting it to .docx. Are you saying you editing it as a .doc and then sent it back as a .docx? Or did you work on it, save it, convert it, and then convert it back? Thanks very much for the response, by the way.
