Word 2013: Extremely slow saving and pasting plain text in long documents

Could Microsoft please stop saying it is the rest of the world which does not work.

If 100,000 users of MS Office 2013 face this problem than it appears to be a Microsoft problem, having designed major productivity software not able to run failure proof on the average modern PC under Windows 8.1. within an environment of other software also working on such computer.

I just can repeat what others said. Redmont please try to take the issue serious and fix it, as we all suffer from it and are not software engineers who can spend time in the guts of our PCs, risking that we mess something up and have to restart all over.

The idea to stop a problem by stopping automatic saving, seems hilarious to me. Its like telling a climber to fix a problem with a rope, by not using the rope.

Windows may be "clean," but are you saying that you have no other program installed on the computer except Office? Many programs install poorly designed add-ins without asking the user first.

As a troubleshooting step, you can start Word in Safe mode and see if the program then works correctly. To start in Safe mode: Hold the Windows logo key as you press R; in the Run dialog box, type winword /safe and press Enter. If Safe mode works, it is clear that the problem is with the registry, with the Normal template, or with an add-in (the last option being the most likely), and you can continue troubleshooting from there.

Things get overlooked simply because people do not start new threads describing in detail their problem.

While I admire your fortitude in reading the 91 entries in this thread before your own, I do not have the inclination to do that.  I would therefore suggest that you start a new thread in which you provide full details of the issues that you have and when they occur.

Do you have Abbyy Finereader installed on the PC? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013.  See:

Do you have Toshiba Book Reader installed on the PC?  It has been reported that uninstalling that brings Office back to working status.

Do you have the Acrobat PDFMaker add-in.  It has been reported that uninstalling that overcomes an issue with a message appearing that states "The document contains macros. Macro support for this application is disabled. Features requiring VBA are not available. Would you like to open this document as a read only?"

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.oldas was mentioned in:

From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

For the problem of nothing appearing when you start typing in a blank document in Word in Office 365 Home Premium, and you hear a bell sound with each keypress, but no characters appear, disable the SMARTInk add-in for an interactive whiteboard.

This list is ridiculous. Repeatedly posters to this thread have stated that they have clean windows 8 or 8.1 and Word 2013 on new computers, even--as I do. No add in or other garbage, and the program itself is not reliable. I work on 70k word MSS and slow saving, unsure saving, wonky track changes, all the other issues (lagging cursor or letters when typing) mentioned above are present. Please fix it. Please. Now. Thank you.

It is really amazing and quite frustrating how buggy Word 2013 is.  Microsoft has managed to make something as simple as saving a document harder to do.  It is unforgiveable that they've disabled right-click autocorrect additions, too.  Can anyone recommend a superior word processing program?  I think Microsoft needs to get out of this business - new versions are supposed to be superior to early ones, not significantly worse.

In File/Options/Advance/Save/ Disabling background save and enable always create a backup on save, make the fix for me.
