Word 2013: Extremely slow saving and pasting plain text in long documents

I am using the latest Word 2013 RC in German. Allthough I am very pleased with the overall performance and features of this new version, I ran into some very annoying problems, that didn't exist with the latest Word 2010. These should be easy to reproduce:

  1. Take a long document (*.docx) with at least 100 pages and try to save it. This takes forever - I can see the progress bar filling up slowly. It takes at least 10-20 seconds to save. During that process I cannot do anything within Word - not even scroll smoothly. It slows down to the point of almost freezing up. I didn't have this problem with Word 2010 on the same system.
  2. Take that same document (>100 pages) and try to copy&paste some text (for example out of Firefox) and paste it as plain text - this takes at least 1 to 2 seconds. I didn't have any kind of delay with Word 2010.
  3. Word 2013 seems to work ok with *.doc files - it's still slower than Word 2010 a lot faster than saving *.docx files.

I have no problems whatsoever with short documents. Can anyone confirm these problems with Word 2013 RC?

It seems there is one issue being overlooked here, way too many times...and this whole thing blows my mind! Yes...we have established that turning off the background saving makes the documents save faster; that much is obvious by now.

But what about all the other problems that have been reported in this thread, like the typing lag and the scrolling, etc? For someone like me, a writer with a large manuscript, these 5 and 10 second lag times are unacceptable. I have a clean system--a new system with a new MS Office...a WHOLE YEAR after this thread was started, mind you. And I am STILL having the problem. What I want to know is WHERE IS MICROSOFT ON THIS?!

I'm working on a 1,471 page document now and I have no problems with typing lag, scrolling, etc. Perhaps there is another issue for you - an incompatible driver or a software conflict?

Of course the onus should be on Microsoft here. Office 2013 has way too many issues that users have to track down, workaround, etc. But I don't think much help is coming from Redmond.

Things get overlooked simply because people do not start new threads describing in detail their problem.

While I admire your fortitude in reading the 91 entries in this thread before your own, I do not have the inclination to do that.  I would therefore suggest that you start a new thread in which you provide full details of the issues that you have and when they occur.

I do not know if I have posted the following to this thread previously but, alot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications.  This is my (expanding) list of things to try when Office 2013\365 won’t start or crashes:

See the Article “Why can’t I start my Office 2013 application at:

Do you have Abbyy Finereader installed on the PC? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013.  See:

Do you have “Fun Tools” add-in? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013

Do you have Toshiba Book Reader installed on the PC?  It has been reported that uninstalling that brings Office back to working status.

Do you have the Acrobat PDFMaker add-in.  It has been reported that uninstalling that overcomes an issue with a message appearing that states "The document contains macros. Macro support for this application is disabled. Features requiring VBA are not available. Would you like to open this document as a read only?"

It appears that there may be some hardware incompatibilities as well.  If you have the NVIDIA driver NVWGF2UM.DLL, try renaming it as: NVWGF2UM.oldas was mentioned in:

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office\_2013\_release-word/microsoft-word-has-stopped-working-when-i-close/8375b5b6-4f7e-46ed-a02b-90152ecad287#LastReply

From the File tab, select Options and then click on Advanced and then in the Display section of the dialog, check the box for Disable hardware graphics acceleration

For the error message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", use Windows Explorer to access the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15 folder and right click on WINWORD.EXE then on Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and uncheck all the boxes.  It has also been reported that the problem can be overcome by editing the registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.Document.12\shell\Open and deleting the ddeexec key.

The ddeexec can also be deleted from

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Word.DocumentMacroEnabled.12\shell\Open.

That fix is described at ...

    http://www.dilloway.co.uk/there-was-a-problem-sending-the-command.html

It has been reported that uninstalling FastPictureView and FastPictureViewer Pro… overcomes the issue of the Minimize, Maximize, Close and Help buttons not being visible in Office 2013.

If you have a Canon 8350 printer, try using the Canon MF8000 UFRI LT XPS driver as detail in the post by Riad Amstha on April 14 in the thread at:

For the problem of nothing appearing when you start typing in a blank document in Word in Office 365 Home Premium, and you hear a bell sound with each keypress, but no characters appear, disable the SMARTInk add-in for an interactive whiteboard.

I sat down to edit over an hour ago. How have I been spending that hour? Reading this thread and trying every single pointless troubleshooting step. None of which have worked.

So for now, I suppose I will take the back road and re-save all my files as ".doc" and then just have to save them again as ".docx" before sending them to my editor (since it's not just the slow saving that's a problem--though that IS a huge problem, since I save very frequently).

We have a fix for now, until Microsoft gets their butt in gear and fixes the bug themselves--properly. But the fact that it's been a year since this thread started and numerous people have claimed they have reported it, yet NOTHING has been addressed or fixed, tells me a proper solution won't be made available, and I'm not going to get my hopes up about there ever being one. This whole thing is just frustrating.

Bad, Microsoft. Bad. Very disappointing, after spending so much money to get "better" software.

Thank you! I have been so frustrated with 40-second saves and your simple solution worked for me. Microsoft should hire you.

It worked well to me Settings -> Advanced ->Save, and disable all options.
