remove password from excel 2013

I want to remove the password that I have been using with some of my Excel 2013 workbooks.

I tried the suggestions from your website but with no avail.

Every time that I open an Excel 2013 workbook I am asked for a password.

What should I  do.

Here is what worked for me (thanks to a reply from a forum person who gave me Excel 2010 instructions. Excel 2013 is a bit different, but I figured it out):

  1. Open the workbook and enter the password to open the file.
  2. Click the FILE tab and select INFO
  3. Click the dropdown arrow in the PROTECT WORKBOOK box.
  4. Click the ENCRYPT WITH PASSWORD option.
  5. A box will pop up with the password shown by dots (........). Clear the password dots.
  6. SAVE or SAVE AS the file and the password will be gone.

After that you should be able to open the file without entering a password.

Removing passwords is not something ms policies permit.

Recreating the file would be a simpler option.

    Click File>Save As

    Choose the location where you want to save your protected file

    When the save box opens you will see a Tools button at the bottom next to the save button corner

    Click Tools>General Options

    When the box opens clear out any passwords that are in the "Password to open" and Password to modify" boxes.

    Click OK

    My conclusion is that the issue depends on how one creates the password in the first place -  if it was created as above under file/into/protect, the steps work.

    But in my case, the password protection was created in Excel 2013 by using "save as", with options set to enable write protection.

    To revert the process, we equally used "save as" to gain access to the save options. However, Excel 2013 refuses - read crashes... when trying to save (replace) onto the existing file with the new options set  i.e. no password for editing. That used to work in previous versions of Excel.

    I followed the steps above, but that does not allow me to remove the password at all in case password was created by save as...

    In that case: quickest solution:  save as with new options, but under different file name, removed the original protected file.

    Maybe I am a bit naïve. Surely when Microsoft gave us the facility to create a password so that we can stop others from changing the details in the Excel sheets that they would have created the means to reverse this process.

    I find this difficult to accept your answer.
