Word 2013 slow typing

Hi Folks,

I am using Word 2013 that comes with my Office 365. I regularly paste photos into cells in a word document template that I use every day, and then write a description in a neighboring cell. It is saved in the most recent word format.

Just recently the display of the text when typing is veryyyyy slow showing up when typing after pasting the picture/s. I have used the Office 365 for 6 months or more before this issue cropped up. This issue has just started in last week or so. No hardware or driver issues on computer, and I have tried a system restore to a date prior to the problem with no results. I use Windows 7 Professional, service pack 1. Plenty of RAM, and a large 480 GB solid state hard drive for the C drive.

The weird thing is, if I save the document in the older format (word 97-2003) the program works fine, but that is not a good long term solution for numerous reasons. I have tried the disabling the hardware acceleration as suggested in other blogs, but that did not resolve the issue. I have also tried increasing the virtual memory, which did not help either. Getting ready to jump out a window, hope someone has a suggestion that works. Getting ready to go back to office 2010. Don't like the Outlook 2013 preview pane limited view of the body of the email issue, and this latest issue makes me crazy with all the time I have burned up on it...

Thanks in advance.

Tom

    Dear Help With and others,

Thanks for your offer to look at the document, and your suggestions. Let me know how to get you a copy, and I am happy to share the document. Not sure how to give you a link. If you have an email address I will send it to you. I have a cloud account with Microsoft, and a Google account, does that work. Not sure I ever shared a document without sending it as an attachment..

The issue crops up when I paste a photo into a "cell" in the new word format. My Word documents have been updated to the new formats over the years. I think the "cells" are now called tables. In the 2003 Office, I created lots of documents with cells in them, (1) use was to automatically re-size pictures that were pasted into a document, since none of the versions of Word have had a default picture size setting for when pasting photos into the document. That was a work around someone suggested years ago, and it has worked for years.

The new 2013 word has no "cells" (that I can find) just the tables that can be inserted. The cells for the photos I use are one line at a time, in which the picture is pasted inside, and then another cell below where the text is typed in. Based on how I have adjust the width of the cell size, you will get a specific picture size when pasting pictures into it in the document.

I have spent hours recently try to get the new tables option (in Word 2013) to do the same thing that the old "cells" did, without success. Maybe I am not very smart, but have been using word since it came out. Not only do the new tables not resize the pictures no matter what I have tried, but they also do not allow the picture to stay centered in the page (they shift to the right) even when the "center" option is highlighted in the Paragraph on the ribbon.

As a result I have not used the new tables which apparently, based on my testing, do not have the same slow typing issue, but they don't allow me to automatically re-size the pictures. Frankly I am amazed this is so, and or that what I want to do is so difficult. One would think that setting the size of pictures to be pasted would be a given, so you did not have to do each manually but that is apparently not the case (the Gods at Microsoft apparently don't know we need to do that).  I do hundreds of documents a year, with 5-20 pictures each pasted in, and all photos need to be the same size to fit two to a page, and all have descriptions below them.

The really slow stuff I have experienced recently clearly has something to do with the Animation feature that Rohn007 suggested I try. The letter typing scroll out is much slower in the new word format than the old 2003 format after the recent update. All one has to do is hold any letter key down inside a 2013 document with a cell created in the 2003 format, or the eraser key if there is text already. It is much slower than when working in the body of the document. The suggested reg-edit has helped a little, but the typing scroll out is still pretty slow. When you hold a letter key down and then lift it, the letters keep coming for a short time…

By doing the registry hack, it made it so it is tolerable. It clearly the typing scroll out or erase is not as quick as in word 97-2003 format when working inside a cell. If I go back and save the document in the old 2003 format it is not an issue at all, which makes no sense to me. It does not make sense to me that it is the program, since I would think the program it is treating the formats the same way with respect to that type of issue, but maybe/apparently not...

Any ways thanks for your thoughts and offer to help. Not sure where to go from here, but sort of sad to have to fuss with this stuff, just to keep doing what I had been doing for years.

    Regards,

    Tom

Please tell us what version of Word you were using, and give us instructions on exactly how to insert a "cell" so we can try to recreate it in the old and new versions.

Here are instructions for uploading an example file to MS Skydrive, and how to get the link to paste into your reply here

Posting Images / screen captures / using IE and Skydrive – File Share

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/how-do-i-post-a-screen-shot-on-this-forum/c86de820-c620-401c-a804-9f6337cd3053

(I suggest you use Skydrive so MS is paying for the space rather than some other free site)

    ·         Capture the image using a screen capture tool

    ·         Save to your HD. I know BMP works, I don’t know about other formats

    ·         Upload the image file to a file sharing site, like Skydrive: https://login.live.com/login.srf?wa=wsignin1.0&rpsnv=11&ct=1326066082&rver=6.1.6206.0&wp=MBI_SSL_SHARED&wreply=https:%2F%2Fskydrive.live.com%2F&lc=4105&id=250206&mkt=en-CA&cbcxt=sky

    ·         In Skydrive click on the Public folder

    ·         Click on “Add Files” (at top of window)

    ·         Drag the file from Windows Explorer into the target box displayed by Skydrive

    ·         Click on the check box beside the file name

    ·         Click on “View Original” (on right side of window) to open the image in a new browser window/tab

    ·         In IE, we can right-click on the image and click on Copy

    ·         In Firefox,  use <CTL><A> (to select all), then <CTL><C>  (to copy it

    ·         Click on the forum input box to make it active

    ·         <CTL><V> to paste the image into it

    ·         Give it a few seconds to upload the image

(HEY Site Owners: this process is insanely complex! LET US PASTE images directly into the input fields! Like we could before the app was “improved’ <heavy sarcasm> last year)

Posting using Metrofied Skydrive File Share

    • If you have a predefined PUBLIC folder use it for sharing. That way you know which files are out there for others to see.  If not create a new folder.
    • Beside the "Sort by:" drop down there are 3 icons: Details View, Thumbnail View and Details pane.  I prefer to work in the details view.
    • On the top "menu" there is a "Create" button, select "folder" and name it.
    • Click on the folder name to enter the folder
    • On the top menu bar there is an "Upload" button. Find the file and click on it. It will take several seconds to upload the file.
    • Single click on the checkmark box, or right click on the file name
    • click on the share option
    • you should see a new dialog with 3 options on the left side. Choose "Get a Link".
    • In the right side of the pane you will have 3 options: "View Only", "View and Edit" and "Public".
    • click on the button under the appropriate choice
    • copy the generated link
    • click on done to close the dialog
    • Paste the link in here or where ever it is needed.

File Sharing / File Share / Skydrive

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/web-apps-help/share-office-documents-in-skydrive-HA101820121.aspx

It is simple enough. First thing to remember is never post anything on a file share (share being the key word!) site (public or private) that you wouldn't be willing to see posted on a public bill board.

Create a "sanitized" version of the file that does not contain any sensitive personal or corporate information

Pick a file share service:, Skydrive, Fyels, Ge.tt, Crate, to name a few) and sign up for a FREE account

Follow their instructions to upload the file and to mark is as public shared

Copy the link to the file

Paste it in the post back here.

This link has instructions specific to MS Skydrive: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproui/thread/4fc10639-02db-4665-993a-08d865088d65

NOTE: MS has added file structure validation to Skydrive. If your problem is file corruption, like the “missing XML end tag” problem, you can no longer upload the files to Skydrive. Use one of the other file sharing site.

**FYI:**MS has change the use term on Skydrive. Originally they offered 25 GB for free. They have decided to reduce that to 7 GB for new users.  Anyone who is already a member can "grandfather" to keep the 25 GB allowance.

You have to log in to your account. You'll see that your limit has been reduced to 7GB. Go to Manage Storage and click on the button to "Reserve" 25 GB.

Your limit is back up to 25 GB.

    Hi Folks,

I originally created the document in Word 2003. It was then updated to Word 2010 when I updated, and then later to Word 2013 when I updated to that version 5 months ago. It had worked flawlessly until a short time ago.

There is no point in doing a screen shot, since it is a typing/scroll out issue. After the recent Office update, when pasting a picture or more in the cells imbedded in the template (see link to get copy), afterwards when you type in the description cell (next cell down), the scroll out of the letters slows way down, my guess 50% slower and it get worse if you add more photos..

It is easy to test. Copy the document from the link below onto your desktop and open. Put cursor inside a cell (you must have "View Grid Lines" clicked under "table tools/design menu" (in Word 2013) so the cell outline shows (otherwise they are hidden by default) to make it easy to drop cursor inside the cell.

Once cursor is inside any of the numbered cells (those are the cells I write descriptions in), press and hold any letter key down, and watch the speed of the scroll out of letters. Then paste a picture inside the shorter cell above (the cells are sized to shrink pictures to a certain size) and then try the same "hold key down" inside the text line cell, and you will see the difference.

The funny thing is, if you save the same document (I have given you just a portion of it) in Word 97-2003 format, it works fine with no slow down. I also did not have the trouble using Word 2010.

    https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?resid=7EA012E2D364AE3D!105

This has caused some much trouble (work slowdown), I finally spent the time and recreated a new photo template document in the new format, using the tables function in Word 2013, and finally (after hours of fooling around) found a way to get them to resize my pictures automatically when pasted in that way, so the whole issue may be moot, but I must admit I liked my older format better than what I could create using the newer table format. If anyone (who has the same issue) needs that technique, leave a message on the board and I will write the process up.

I must say, I find myself scratching my head that this has been such a challenge.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughtfulness and offer to help.

    Regards,

    Tom

I downloaded the file, it is in DOCX not DOTX format. Is that intentional? If it is intended for use as a template, as it apparently is, you should save as DOTX (or DOTM).  I have had (and lost) this DOTX vs DOCX conversation many times.

    • Started Word 2013
    • Opened the file
    • Typed in field "1)", repeat at "normal" speed.
    • Did a screen capture, pasted into box above the input "box"
    • Returned to input box, typing speed is normal.

    Did I do something different?

This would suggest to me your problem may be local, caused by an addon you have running. Here are some generic trouble shooting techniques that may help identify the cause.

Trouble Shoot Word problems that occur when you start or use Word 2010, 2007, 2003, or 2002

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541  2003-2010

    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=820919 -2002-2003

NOTE: part of this procedure is disabling addins. If you want to take a shortcut, check to see if you have a BlueTooth device driver or addin, ie “send to Bluetooth”, installed. Disabling BlueTooth is rapidly moving to the top of my Office trouble shooting process. Blue Tooth drivers have been identified as the cause of problems with many different “random” symptoms. If you have BlueTooth, disable it in control panel, device manager and possibly as an addin in Office apps.  It’s not that I think there is anything inherently bad with Blue Tooth. The problem is with the people writing the drivers.

    Don’t Assume ANYTHING!

Don’t assume some part of the trouble shooting processes listed below doesn’t apply to you. Often there are things going on in the background that you just aren’t aware of. For example, when installing software it is all too easy to have an unwanted app installed if you don’t carefully read every screen.

    Uninstall Recent Software

At this point, you have also think about any software or plugins that you may have installed on your computer. Annoyingly, this problem with Word can be caused by a program that is completely unrelated to Word!

Did you recently install some new hardware? A printer, scanner, label machine, web cam, tablet, etc? Have you installed any software? If so, uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.  The following Skype links are an example of this issue

<snip> While I couldn't precisely say whether the problems from Office stemmed from the iCloud Panel software, I decided to uninstall the software as I don't use it anyway. After doing that, Office is now working perfectly fine. No more re-starting or crashing when I'm running IE at the back, nor trying to copy something in Word or Excel. It looks like the iCloud Panel software does have some compatibility issues with Office. </snip>

Clipboard functionality no longer allows ability to paste formatting in Office Apps – Skype error – Official notice

Starting in March 2012, "Skype click to Call" has been causing problems File Open problems, and Copy/Paste problems in Office Apps.

The quick test for this problem is to close all open browsers. If the problem goes away it is probably Skype.

March 30 – MS has released an update to Skype that fixes the problem. Go to the Skype site, download and install the newest version ofc the program.

    Clipboard broken – “Smart RAM”

    <snip>

For anyone reading this, I figured out the problem after surfing the web for the past 3-4 weeks. Painful process. I have a paid version of Advanced SystemCare Pro, v5.2.0. 3-4 weeks ago, while scanning through it's vast offerings, I came across a feature I could activate called "Smart RAM". I turned it on and checked the 5 boxes it offers in the settings. The last of those 5 is "Clean Clipboard". I unchecked this box a few minutes ago and it fixed my issues. I now have no problems with copy/paste. Info only, it case it helps anyone.

    Cannot select text – “Synergy”

<snip>  Hi, I recently came across this problem in MS Word 2007 where after I type or hit any key on my keyboard while in the Word window, I can no longer highlight text with my mouse (by clicking once at the beginning of the text and dragging the mouse to the end of the text portion that I want to highlight). I have found that if I click out of the Word window and press any key on the keyboard, this seems to resolve the problem and I can finally highlight with my mouse. However, as soon as I type anything in the Word window again, highlighting with the mouse no longer works. Clicking on any key again within the Word window does not resolve the issue- I have to push a key outside the Word window in order to resolve the problem.    </snip>

<snip> Hi, I just figured out the problem. I had installed the Synergy program 1.5 weeks ago and by uninstalling it the problem appears to be resolved. Thank you both for your time and help.  </snip>

Bluetooth Fix: “Microsoft Word has stopped working”

    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-microsoft-word-has-stopped-working

Example of a problem caused by Bluetooth

Alright, well, I found the answer to this final issue: I only needed to disable the Bluetooth add-in on Options. I have no idea why that would have been the problem, but I found it as a suggested fix here. Now every single thing opens quickly and without error.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

    As a recap:

    ·         My Office 2010 was a Click-to-Run version

    ·         Word suddenly giving me messages about "Downloading the Required Feature," freezing up, slowing down...

    ·         Ultimately had to uninstall Office

    ·         Reinstalled it from the Microsoft website with my product key, choosing the 64-bit version instead of the Click-to-Run version

    ·         Installed all new updates from Windows Updates

    ·         Restarted computer

    ·         Word working quickly with no messages, but became unresponsive when trying to open old files

    ·         Went to File->Options->Add-Ins->Go-> and unchecked Bluetooth.

    ·         Everything seems to be back to normal, if not better than before.

Black Blob during Copy / Paste

My problem is if I copy text from a web site or from Excel, Access etc into Word all I get is a black spot.

I have tried a repair install and checking all the settings against my laptop - where this function works properly.

The problem is caused by a defective Bluetooth add-in for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, turn off the Com Addin.

    Additional Notes:

    1.      The defective Bluetooth add-in is usually installed by a Bluetooth driver. (In my case - Intel Centrino Wireless Bluetooth 3.0 + High Speed Adaptor (v1.1))

    2.      Updating your Bluetooth driver (or reverting to an older version) may also resolve the problem.

    3.      Unfortunately simply disabling the add-in through the Word options may result in a 3 second freeze when loading Word 2007. (If this is a problem, changing to a different bluetooth driver version may be the better option)

Additional tip - Remove Older Printer Drivers

Oddly enough, this ended up being the cause of my problem. I had an older print driver installed on my Win7 machine and once I removed that driver, Word started working without any problems!

You can delete individual printer drivers by going into the registry. Note that simply going to Printers and Faxes and deleting a printer there does not delete the printer driver.

Follow Step 3 in my previous post about a printer error to remove the printer drivers:

Windows 8 / Office 2013 / HP printing probem - solution, install OLDER printer driver!

Office 2013 instead.  I am having problems with Excel, Word and Outlook printing to two separate HP laserjet printers, models 1522nf and model 3015.  I can print one file from these applications.  The second file locks up the Excel, Word or Outlook program and the only solution that I have found is to close out of the program.  If I restart my computer, I can then print one file beofre it locks up again.  This only happens with my HP Laserjet Printers.  I have a HP Officejet 8600 printer that does not have any problems printing in Office 2013 Excel, Word or Outlook.   Both of my Laserjet printers will print anything on Internet Exployer or non Office based programs without any issues.  I have downloaded the latest drivers for these printers and looked for any latest updates to Office 2013 and made sure that I had the most recent.

I installed the printer driver Vista version for my HP Laserjet 1522 and that fixed the problem with the Spolling / Cache issue with Office 2013.  Best Buy and HP via phone could not come up with this answer.   Thanks again!

When using word 2013, the arrows on the vertical scroll bar on right of page are not working well.

They work a couple of times then seize up.  I use them when slowly reading through or altering a document and hate that they are not functioning properly!!

    OK, whatever works …

Word 2013 Crashes “all the time” - Adobe PS CS3 issue

Found out after many test that there's an incompatibility between Adobe PS CS3 and Word 2013 fonts causing the Word to crash. No clue about a solution except not using Adobe fonts on Word.

Fix: “Microsoft Word has stopped working” – Turn off Addins in Pictures

    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-microsoft-word-has-stopped-working

    **************************

Continuing the earlier point about DOCX vs DOTX and creating templates in general:

Your design is very elementary, essentially a simple emulation of a typewriter page. It takes advantage of very few Word features.

Using tables to keep pictures and their titles together is something I like to do. However, I like to keep both rows in a single table.  It makes keeping them together a little easier.   Either way, yours layout or mine, I like to select the lines/rows affected then go to the Home tab > Paragraph group > Paragraph dialog launcher > Line and Page Breaks tab.  Then turn on "Keep Lines Together" option.  That way they break across pages as a unit.

Rather than manually numbering each line, and therefor having to create a whole bunch of  you can put auto numbers or the { SEQ } field in them. Then the user simply has to copy and paste to recreate more input areas without worrying about the numbers

FYI: rather than typing the "A&P ... Photo sheet" lines in the body of the text, that is something that absolutely should in the header.  Since you have a header, I assume that you intend these documents to be printed.  On the assumption, I would add a way of uniquely identifying the printed pages, ie the claim number and generated page numbers.  I prefer  Page x of y to make page sorting easier.

The claim number in the header is a "cross reference" to a bookmark I created in the body. They just have to type over "replace" in the body.

The numbers in the tables are done using the { SEQ } field code.

Both the cross reference and the number field codes just need to be updated to display the correct values. <CTL><A> followed by <CTL><F9> will update the sequence numbers.  The header can be set to automatically update when Printing: File menu > Options command > Display option > Printing Options section > turn on "Update Fields Before Printing" and "Updated LInked Data before Printing".

Here is a link to an example of what I would do with your template: http://sdrv.ms/184JIZK

Can you describe the way you came up with to automatically resize images as you paste them.  What is the difference between two techniques?

    Dear Rohn,

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions. I agree with many, but frankly the documents I do are fairly straight forward reports, (speed of getting the document done, was more import than fancy formatting) that have worked with over the years. The document is in the correct format, DOCX since it is opened and renamed to the new file # as we set up each job, so the original "template" (word document) stays the same. That section you saw is just the end of the report template/document and it has worked fine for many years.

I won't bore you with repeating my earlier comments. I really was just trying to avoid making a new document, which I have now done. Something has happened recently in the new word that it does not like the picture pasted into the "cells" in the document, and it really affects the speed of the scroll out of the text for some reason, which is what I was trying to address. If you save the same document in the older word format, the issue goes away. If you did not have that happen following my suggested test, than I am really puzzled since I tried it on multiple computers, all with the same result.

I have tried running word in safe mode, the same document on other computers etc, and they all do it, so I don't think it is other conflicts etc. I had spent many hours testing before I came to that conclusion. either way the issue is moot, I made a new document that no longer has the issue. It is just odd that every report document template I have with that type of table cell in it starting doing the same thing after a recent Office 365 update?

Now that I have spend some time figuring out the new table settings in word 2013, making a new "table" and getting it to re-size the pictures is pretty straight forward. I set up a table cell on the page where you want to paste the picture in, make it the size you want 3.5" X 5" as an example, and then in the menu "table tools/layout/cell margins I remove the check mark in the box at the bottom "automatically resize to fit contents". Whatever size I make the table cell, is the size of the picture when pasted in it within the existing ratio of the original photo.

Thanks again for all your suggestions, I will experiment with some of them.

    Tom
