Word Always Opens Documents In Read-Only Mode / Subscription

I'm working with documents stored on my local drive, and whenever I double-click on one to open and edit it, Word starts up and presents it in read-only mode.  If I close Word and then immediately double-click the document again, it opens up without the read-only indicator.

These are documents which are edited every day.  I'm wondering if the fact that they're stored in a folder which is monitored by a file synchronization application has anything to do with this.

Secondly, when I bought Office 365 Home Premium online, it appeared that my only option was the monthly plan, which ostensibly is more expensive than the yearly plan.  I don't see any way to change my account from monthly to yearly.  Am I missing something?

I had the same issue when I updated my computer to Office 2013.

This is what I did and took care of it:

I opened Word (not in safe mode)

    Click on File

    Then click on Options

Under the General tab, items at the bottom of the list:

Under "Tell me if Microsoft Word isn't the default program for viewing and editing documents",

You will see: " Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view".

Make sure you uncheck the selection, click OK, then close Word.

Then I try to open the file again (My issue was with files received via email), and it was no longer in reading mode. Hope this helps.

File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Protected View and uncheck the boxes for the items for which you no longer wanted the Protected View to apply.

Note the warning that by disabling Protected View, you could be exposing your computer to possible security threats.

There is also a chance that you will lose any edits made to a document opened directly from the internet or as an attachment to an email message, unless you specifically use File>Save As and select the location into which the document is saved.

    Hi,

    I need additional information:

What happens when you open Word application and then open the file from within Word?

This could be due to the 3rd party program conflict with the Word documents.

Do you experience any similar issue for other files from same folder? What happens when you save a Word document on desktop and then try double click and opening it?

    1. Start Word in safe mode and verify whether issue re-occurs. Follow the below mentioned steps to start Office application in safe mode:

    * Hold Windows key + R.

    * Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

    Winword /safe

Note: There is space between Winword.Outlook and '/'.

If Word safe works, disable the add-ins following steps mentioned below and determine the problem causing add-in:

    a) Click on File menu, click Options, Add-ins, Go button besides Manage: Com-in Add.

    b) Check if there are add-ins listed, clear the check box.

    c) Close the Office program and restart it.

    d) Disable each add-in one at a time, restart the Excel/Word, and repeat the above procedure. If the issue reappears again, it will help you to determine which add-in is causing this issue.

You may also follow the manual troubleshooting steps mentioned in the link below and see if it helps:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

Note: Look for Office\15.0 folder instead of Office\14.0. And ensure to back up the registry before any modification/deletion. Check the link below for information about registry backup.

It is set that way to protect you from yourself.

The option can be turned off via File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Protected View.

Go to File>Options>Trust Center>Trust Center Settings>Trusted Locations and add the folder from which you are opening the documents as a "Trusted Location"
