Office 2013 Word Keeps Freezing (Not responding)

Hi,

I have just purchased Office 2013 and have used Word for a couple of minutes, but it repeatedly stops responding in specific scenarios.

It is far too buggy for me to migrate from my previous version of Office.

Situations in which it freezes:

  • Opening the options menu
  • On start up (when it claims that it is not the default program) - I fixed this one by making it the default program for everything
  • Closing the word document and choosing not to save
  • Scrolling through a very long document

Excel does not seem to have the same bugs, and I have successfully reached the options page on that program to turn off graphics acceleration.

The main reason I purchased Office 2013 was for Word and I would really like to have it functioning properly.

I am currently very disappointed and annoyed.

Other (possibly) relevant details

Platform: Windows 7

Other

Microsoft Office 2003

Microsoft 2010 Starter (pre-installed on laptop purchase)

Thanks for the help.

I installed MS Office 365 a few weeks ago.  It constantly freezes on me.  I try to move the cursor or type in new text and absolutely nothing happens.  Or I save something (which has been saved before) and the format changes.  Often I get the message that it is "not responding".  I run Windows 8 (wasn't given a choice about that!).  The only programs I use are MS Office Premium, Quickbooks and a Hallmark Card Studio.  Absolutely no added apps except what came on the computer and I got rid of any games (Wild Tangent).  Can anyone make any suggestions?

    Hi,

I will help you with the issue you are facing related to Word program.

Does the issue occur only while working with Word application or is it the same with all the Office applications?

In order to troubleshoot the issue related to Word, try the steps below:

    Step 1:

If you have any graphics card on the computer, try to update the drivers by visiting the respective website or by contacting the vendor and check if it helps fix the issue.

    Step 2:

If the above steps fail, try to open Word in safe mode and check if the issue occurs:

    • Hold Windows key + R.
    • Copy and paste, or type the following command in the Open box, and then press Enter:

    WinWord /safe

Note: There is space between WinWord and /

If Word works fine in safe mode, try to disable the add-ins associated with Word program and then check the result:

    • Click on File menu, Options and then Add-ins.
    • Click on Go button besides Manage: Com-in Add.
    • Check if there are add-ins listed, clear the checkbox to disable them.
    • Click OK.
    • Open Word to check if the issue occurs.

    Step 3:

You may also try disabling the hardware acceleration for Word:

    Open the Word program.

    • Click on file, Options.
    • Go to the Advanced tab.
    • Under****the Display section, uncheck the box for 'Disable hardware graphics acceleration'.
    • Click ok.

If the issue persists in Word safe mode, then try to repair the Office program and check if it helps.

Refer to the link below to know how to repair the Office program:

I hope the above steps helps. If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Office related issues let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.

    Hi Deepa

I've been having these 'not-responding ' problems for several weeks using Windows 8 set up in March this year. I've just tried your suggestions and it works fine in Safe mode, but have followed the add-ins suggestions but its still 'not-responding' in normal mode. Any more suggestions?
