Office 2013 Word Keeps Freezing (Not responding)

Hi,

I have just purchased Office 2013 and have used Word for a couple of minutes, but it repeatedly stops responding in specific scenarios.

It is far too buggy for me to migrate from my previous version of Office.

Situations in which it freezes:

  • Opening the options menu
  • On start up (when it claims that it is not the default program) - I fixed this one by making it the default program for everything
  • Closing the word document and choosing not to save
  • Scrolling through a very long document

Excel does not seem to have the same bugs, and I have successfully reached the options page on that program to turn off graphics acceleration.

The main reason I purchased Office 2013 was for Word and I would really like to have it functioning properly.

I am currently very disappointed and annoyed.

Other (possibly) relevant details

Platform: Windows 7

Other

Microsoft Office 2003

Microsoft 2010 Starter (pre-installed on laptop purchase)

Thanks for the help.

I have an old work Dell latpop 5500 that has office 2010 on it, 4g ram. I would get the not responding, everyone did, but the app would always recover. I find myself using it to edit my work docs instead of my new machine:

I put together a fresh computer:

    I5-4690K, overclocked to 4.1ghz

    16g 2400 ram

    120g SSD

    Asus Z97-A mbd

    older radeon HD6670

    Intel integrated graphics 4600

Loaded win81. updated it for a day. installed office 2013 fresh.

Tried to open a document that was 23m in size with pics and tables and it would open it. Tried to ctrl end to the end of it, not responding. eventually killed word manually.

Open same doc and just tried to save it, not responding, if i waited it would take 10 mins or more to save it. Eventually killed word manually.

Opened the same doc, save it from docx to doc. it was better but still it would go not responding when trying to

This is a fresh computer with just win81 and office 2013, fully updated. I looked at all of your fixes but I really don't see one that applies. Any more suggestions?

Thanks a gazillion, Garrison -- I tried your suggestion and so far the crashes have stopped. :) :) :) (and none of the other suggestions, including those from the so-called Word pros, helped at all)

Do you have Abbyy Finereader installed on the PC? A number of people have reported that removing it overcomes problems with 2013
