Office 2013 Word Keeps Freezing (Not responding)

Can you see how ridiculous this thread is.  What kind of tool is Word?  There is a word for it.

If the issue persists in Word safe mode, then try to repair the Office program and check if it helps.

My issue was that Word 2010 and Excel 2010 froze (program not responding) whenever I went to Print Preview

Resolved by going to Start>Control Panel>Programs and Features>Office 2010>Change>Repair

First off all, the statement: "A lot of problems with Office 2013 are caused by third party (non-Microsoft) applications" is an absurdity. The idea that a company with almost unlimited resources cannot create a word processing application for its own operating system that isn't crippled by other programs is beyond the realm of all plausibility. 

I have a quad-core i7 laptop running Windows 7 and downloaded the MS Office suite directly from Microsoft. As soon as I open a Word document the circus begins. At roughly sixty-second intervals the program simply freezes "(not responding)" for several seconds at a time. I have tried every trick, work-around and fix alluded to in this post, and none have made an iota of difference.  I even tried the repair feature, but to no avail. 

I suppose I could start uninstalling every other program I have (all of which work perfectly), and when that doesn't solve the problem, begin switching out the hardware components, but what on earth for? I mean, it's a WORD PROCESSOR, for the love of all things holy. The joke of it is, I only stopped using the perfectly good Open Office Writer because the people who edit my work all use Word. Surely if an open source platform can build a working word processor, so can the biggest for-profit software company in the world. 

Now please, go back and fix this. Start all over again if you have to, just sell us a program that works.

I found a fix for me. If you actually "check" the box labeled "**Disable hardware graphics acceleration"**in step 3 it starts to work upon start up. So far no freezing.

We have the same persistent (and consistent) problems as posted here for MS WORD, EXCEL and OUTLOOK.  Primarily, we have random "(NOT RESPONDING)" messages typically appearing in the application title bar.   We have learned to just sit and wait, and the affected application usually unfreezes itself and "catches up" to our last input.   The "wait period" is typically 1-2 minutes for each occurrence.  On a typical 4 hour session, these freezes occur about a dozen times. 

Hardware: 

(8) Brand new, custom built workstations for business and CAD, w/ Intel MB (quad processors), w/ 32GB ram, Dual 500GB SSD HDDs in RAID 1 (mirrored), NVIDIA G5000 card (with latest drivers) to run (4) 30" monitors, all at a cost of $8,000 per unit, so we are top of the line with hardware.  

Software: 

WIndows 7 Professional, with MS Office 2013 Professional.  None of the other "bad actors" software posted have ever been installed.  Ran the MS OffCAT tool posted by Preston228.  Very cool application, but as I expected with these new systems, the tool found almost zero issues.  The only one of any "critical" relevance was that I have my Graphics Accelerator disabled.   This is disabled due to an NVIDIA issue with my (4) monitor set-up (don't recall the exact issue, but I think it had to do with a screen resolution setting).  Maybe I will to uncheck it for a while and see how WORD performs. 

In any event, this application "NOT RESPONDING" issue is a complete time waster and extremely annoying.  I cannot launch my (8) new systems to my highly paid Engineering team until these software bugs are fixed.   Not launching ($90,000 in new workstations) is costing me money by using the older, less productive machines.  But launching them will cost me money due to the expected collective time wasted by my team due to the NOT RESPONDING issues, not to mention the complaints I will get as the business owner for giving them defective software. 

Quite frankly, considering MS's access to it's high powered software engineering team, I find it incomprehensible that MS has not been able to offer quick and reliable fixes for issues like these.   It's obvious from these postings that it is a wide spread problem.  If my company produced equivalent products with no fixes, we'd be out of business in short order. Unlike MS customers that have the MS products deeply embedded into their corporate systems (with no viable alternatives), our customers have numerous alternate solutions to what we produce, and can easily go elsewhere.   

While I am venting, I also find it quite unbelievable that MS has never reviewed the very OLD, but extremely STABLE and RELIABLE and EASY to use AMIPRO WORD program.   I chose AmiPro for my company 22 years ago.  The software has not been updated for almost 20 years, but it quite literally blows MS Word away on ease of functionality and use. 

A few examples of AMIPRO functionality vs. WORD:

MS should take heed , and incorporate these simple and very productive features.  You would make a lot customers VERY happy.

1. AMIPRO does not need to "install" itself.  Simply COPY the files to the HDD and away it goes.  (not a biggie, but a point of previous simplicity)  Obviously, for many good reasons, all windows products need to be installed. 
2. Can add manual page breaks to a TABLE WITHOUT the table starting over as a new table (this feature allows a full size table to act as a FORM "header" with all values repeating on every page (for multi-part forms we print on different color paper).   The only way to do this in Word is to put the entire table in the document header (which has numerous additional limitations)
3. Can set up forms / tables in AMIPRO to show currency numbering formats and add them up in the columns, like EXCEL can do (for an invoice or quotation type form with multi-line pricing and a total at the bottom) 
4. Can position a text box (aka AmiPro frame) ANYWHERE in a document and tell it to STAY at the exact location and it never moves (e.g. if you want to have special / different text at the top of each page.)  Also can position a similar text box and have it REPEAT on every page at the exact same location on the pages. 
5. Managing STYLES is easy (on a difficulty scale of 1 to 10, AmiPro style management is maybe a 1 or 2.  MS Word style management ... 10++++).
6. Forms / PROTECTED document.  It's unbelievable that MS's protected tables allow / force you to "land" on EVERY cell, protected or not when tabbing thru the table.   How annoying when you are trying to tab thru a protected table where you should land ONLY on the unprotected cells.  AmiPro skips only to editable cells.  
7. FORMS building:  In AmiPro ... so easy a caveman could do it.
8. AmiPro has built in "EXCEL" functionality.  I have built some pretty complex spreadsheets embedded into AmiPro documents
9. TABLE cells / UNMERGING:  Cannot unmerge previously merged cells in WORD.  AmiPro ... simple.
10. Selecting text in TABLE CELL:  A very annoying feature in WORD when you try to select ONLY the ending text on the LAST line in a single cell, WORD automatically selects ALL TEXT lines in the cell and will delete all the text if you don't catch it when you only wanted to delete the last line or word(s).   So I have to keep backing up a click to unselect the very last hidden mark or character in the cell.   AmiPro only selects what you highlight.  No hidden annoying functions. 

11)  TABLE Cell COLUMN alignment: Word completely loses it's original columns alignment after the table is manipulated somewhat while building forms.  AmiPro NEVER loses its original column alignment.  If you selected the entire table in a complex AmiPro form, and UNMERGE all cells, the table re-appears exactly like the original column & row layout. 

12. Page Borders:   For some reason WORD allows almost anything to be placed or run OUTSIDE the defined PAGE BORDERS.  AmiPro page borders are fixed and cannot be exceeded.   Just another annoying feature with WORD.

Now the AmiPro dilemma is that is will not run on 32 bit or 64 bit machines (EXCEPT in XP Virtual Machines ... which is also unstable at this time).  Long story short, if someone came to me today with a stable, modified 64 bit version of AmiPro, I would pay a great deal of money for that, and then continue to use AmiPro for all corporate basic documents.  We would still need Word to read other documents. 

Finally, I am not trying to bash MS products, as they are powerful programs that we fully appreciate and cannot live without in our business.  If anyone at MS reads this, please consider it a vast opportunity for improvement of the WORD platform. 

Meanwhile ... how about the fix to the issues on this forum?  Where are we with this?
