Office 2013 Word Keeps Freezing (Not responding)

Hi,

I have just purchased Office 2013 and have used Word for a couple of minutes, but it repeatedly stops responding in specific scenarios.

It is far too buggy for me to migrate from my previous version of Office.

Situations in which it freezes:

  • Opening the options menu
  • On start up (when it claims that it is not the default program) - I fixed this one by making it the default program for everything
  • Closing the word document and choosing not to save
  • Scrolling through a very long document

Excel does not seem to have the same bugs, and I have successfully reached the options page on that program to turn off graphics acceleration.

The main reason I purchased Office 2013 was for Word and I would really like to have it functioning properly.

I am currently very disappointed and annoyed.

Other (possibly) relevant details

Platform: Windows 7

Other

Microsoft Office 2003

Microsoft 2010 Starter (pre-installed on laptop purchase)

Thanks for the help.

I am having the exact same problems with this word program.  It freezes constantly.  It is the full 2013 home version, also on windows 8.  I am so frustrated with this program. Not only does it freeze, but it will not let me select certain things.  Like the next button when using track changes.  Or the update button when I have an update.  I use this program as part of my business, and am very dissatisfied.

I finally got round to trying to solve this problem.

Tried the printer change option but Word still 'not responding'. I've just uninstalled Office Home and Student with the window saying it was uninstalled hiding behind the control panel window!.

The struggled through the wrong screens on the instructions to re-install, waited whilst it reinstalled and with the first document, immediately had 'not responding'.

This product should not have been released to the public until it was proven to work. Wish I was still back on XP. Windows 8 isn't any better or faster than XP.

    Hi Adrian,

    Thank you for replying.

Let me help you with the issue you are facing related to Word and Excel program.

In order to troubleshoot the issue related to Office 2013, try the step below:

Try changing the default printer and check if it helps:

If works fine then you need to update the printer driver, or contact your printer manufacturer to uninstall and reinstall the printer driver as there might be some corruption in the printer driver.

Note: You may use ‘Microsoft XPS Document Writer’ as default.

Click on the link below to know how to change your default printer.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-8/set-change-your-default-printer

If the above step fails, since there is no repair option I would suggest you to run the fix it mentioned in the link below to remove the traces of Office completely from the computer and then try to reinstall the Office program, check if it helps fix the issue:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2739501

Note: Try to save the fix it tool to the desktop and then run it to remove Office.

Once the Office suite is removed, restart the computer and reinstall it.

If you have any issue during the reinstallation process, you may refer to the steps mentioned in the link below:

General troubleshooting for installation of Office 365 Subscription:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2822317

I hope the above steps helps. If the issue still persists, reply and I will be happy to help you.

    Thank You

    Hi Deepa

I installed the Home premium version in March 2013. The issue only occurs in Word. Excel works without problems.

    I don't think I have a graphics card fitted.

I used the safe mode and it worked OK. I disabled the add-ins but to no effect in the normal operation.

I have just tried the link about how to repair. When I select Office 2013 from the programs and features I am only offered an option to Uninstall. The repair or change options shown at the top are not available.

The computer is attached to an Epson SX115 printer

    Regards

    Adrian Botham
