PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times.

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

Thanks,

Dan

    Hi Dan

I think this issue is unacceptable, so I am currently warning other users against using PowerPoint 2013 and I am looking for other presentation tools.

However, I want to try the December Cumulative Update to see if it actually fixes the problem, but I cannot figure out which of the packages to update. Can you help me out? It might be helpful for other users if Microsoft would link directly to the update that fixes this issue.

    Thanks

    Here's the link: KB2837661

It sounds like some folks are having trouble installing it - we're following up. I'd also be interested what additional tools you're using as part of your workflow (e.g. Google Drive sync, etc) and whether or not you've tried any of the suggested workarounds.

    Thanks,

    Dan

Microsoft is stupid.  We purchased new laptops running Windows 8, and had no choice but to pay for the new Microsoft Office suite.  I've got the previous version of Office, but Windows 8 won't run any of the older Office Suits.  So, not only does Microsoft cause us to have to spend additional money, but they are selling something that wipes out hours of users work by erasing the pictures they are placing on their Power Points.  My daughter is crying because of this.  Thanks Microsoft, for screwing you customers.

Dan - please give us a concrete timeline for a fix here. If you are not able to provide this, please refer this to someone up the ladder at Microsoft.

Since the described issue occurs while only using Microsoft products (SkyDrive, MS Office 2013), and since actual user data is destroyed without a known method for recovery, it is clear that Microsoft is responsible for issuing a fix in a timely manner. It is further clear that Microsoft has legal obligations in this case, and could face a class action law suit if a fix is not provided to end users in a timely manner.

I think you'll find if you read the user agreement that you accepted when you began to use the product, Microsoft is pretty well insulated from any and all legal action referencing the use of their software. But, good luck with that.

I experienced the same frustration you are experiencing, but once I figured out the symptom, I started saving often, sometimes several times a slide, and when the event occurred, I reverted back to the previous save, and everything was restored - easy/peasy.

When I did some of my own troubleshooting I found out, at least in my case, it wasn't really a Microsoft issue. It was an issue with the backup software I was using. Once I disabled the backup software the event never occurred again.

Look, I'm not defending these guys, they are big enough to do that on their own. All I am saying is threats are counterproductive and add nothing to the discussion.

Everyone wants a solution, I get it. My solution was found outside the doors of Redmond, WA.
