PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    I had the same issues, images being replaced with red x's and also not being able to save due to "read only" error messages.  I was saving all of my work to Google Drive and just decided to try saving to my PC instead to see if that would help.  It has worked so far!  No more red x's, and I am able to save as often as I like without the read only message.  This was also happening with my Word documents too...getting the read only message every time I tried to save.  Moving my files from Google Drive to my PC seems to have fixed the problem....except that I really need to be able to save them on Drive!!!

    I am SO disappointed with Office 2013!!!!

    I just found this thread while searching for an answer to this issue. Tired of losing work on a regular basis.

    This seems to have started fairly recently on my machine, and I wondered if it might be linked to my upgrade to 64 bit from 32 bit in August.

    I have been frustrated with Carbonite issues of late as well, and after seeing that as a potential trigger here, I uninstalled it. I had been trying out CrashPlan as an alternative, so I elected to go with that instead. We'll see if it helps. I guess I will keep checking back to see if anything else comes of this.

    Here's what I learned. Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working diligently to resolve the issue -- and I believe them. At this point, no one has confirmed that it's a video card issue.

     

    You might be able to help solve the problem:

     

    How to get example files to Microsoft (copied from the PPTFAQ by MVP Steve Rindsberg)

     

    Microsoft needs presentations and steps to reproduce the red-x problem. Specifically they need:

    1. A copy of the presentation BEFORE the red-x appears.
    2. A detailed list of the steps needed to reproduce the problem, starting with a presentation in which the graphics appear correctly and ending with one in which the red-x appears.
    3. Copies of any graphics, sound or video files that you inserted between the time the red-x wasn't there and the time it appeared.
    4. A diagnostic information (NFO) file. See Using System Information to gather troubleshooting info to learn how to create one. The tool is built into PowerPoint and only takes a minute or two to use.

    For the information and files to be useful, you must be able to reproduce the problem. If you can do this, please let us hear from you on the PowerPoint Answers forum.

    If can reproducibly provoke red-x, PLEASE visit the Answers forum (see above) and let your fellow PowerPointers in on the secret. The MVPs will make sure the info gets passed along to the right people at Microsoft. There are thousands of people out there just waiting to be eternally grateful to you. This is worth LOTs of karmic bonus miles, folks.

    But in the meanwhile, practice safe computing and keep the Martians annoyed.

    So if you don't have a file before this happened is there no way of getting your images back?

    Bearing in mind this happened to the file on my PC and on the USB. I have lost all the images on more that 30 pages of power point for my final year university project! :(

    Okay, it happened again.  this time I had Dropbox paused.  It's been a long time and I thought pausing Dropbox was the key to stopping it.  Fortunately, it happened on a file I use as a base for others, so no serious data lost.  Also, no proprietary info on the file so I can share it with anyone if they are looking at this issue.
