PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times.

1. I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2. After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3. I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again. I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper. Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
"Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

This is happening to me about every 10 minutes and I'm about losing my mind. My producitvity is shot, and I'd consider myself a PPT expert, having used it for decades. It doesn't matter the picture format or source, or sometimes I'm not even modifying the pictures, just the text in a file with graphics (and what PPT doesn't have graphics, right?). I keep doing a Save after EVERY EDIT. After about 10 or so edits, I'll get an error message saying it can't open the file. I'll do a "Save As." I have to cycle through this process constantly and after about the 3rd or 4th "Save As", it won't save properly and at least half the graphics, if not all of them, turn into either red X's or a I get a message about the link not found. I'm a highly paid marketing consultant and I can't stand the thought of all my wasted hours. Can anyone help? When I called Microsoft they said they'd not heard of the problem, took very little info from me, and said "Sorry. Feel free to check for updates. Goodbye" Im raging mad.

I am struggling with this same issue and losing productivity due to rework needed. Has an answer been posted/given?

I'm trying to find out if your graphics card is "on the list" -- just to be clear, no actual list exists but I'm looking into know issues associated with your card.

I suppose this issue doesn't relate to a specific graphic card. I'm providing technical support to variable content of customers with different hardware, and there is no difference.

Good point. On the other hand, it might affect customers with certain cards and not others, or maybe cards with certain chipsets.

I've also heard the suggestion that cards with shared video memory are more likely to provoke the problem (many laptops, lower-end desktops).

Since you're dealing with lots of users where most of us only work with our own systems, it might be VERY useful if you could note the system specifics when this happens to your customers.

One way of getting a quick but very detailed system report in PPT 2013:

File | Account

Click the button that looks nothing like a button on the right ... don't ask me what I'd like to do the UI geniuses who plopped this on our sidewalk; if I told you even in jest, it'd get me arrested! ;-) It says "About PowerPoint" and has a big blue question mark.

In the About Microsoft PowerPoint dialog box that appears, click System Info.

From there, you can File | Save or File | Export to pop all that info out to a file.

If you accumulate more than a couple of these from systems that show the problem, let us know here; one of us will figure out how to collect the files from you and get them to somebody at MS.

I found a "fix" -- well, not really a fix, but a way to survive without cursing up a storm and having horrible thoughts about injuring my computer or anyone in its path.

I've simply converted my PPT files to all be 97-2003 format. Since doing that, I've not experienced the problem. Sure, maybe you don't get all the functionality of 2013, but I seriously can't use 2013 in the state that its in.
