PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    Well here's kind of an interesting development...

    I've been struggling with backups. I been using Genie Timeline Pro as my backup software and doing real-time backup to a 1TB external drive. I have suspected that Genie Timeline was a bit of a resource  hog and was behind the rapid fill-in of standby memory. WIthin an hour or so of having 3 gig of open memory, that would get filled up in short order. The system would struggle to perform once the standby memory went to 0 even though available memory might be 3-4 gig.

    I made the decision the other day to uninstall Genie Timeline and just do some manual backups in the meantime until I can get the new computer up and running.

    PowerPoint has not crashed once since. Not a single crash since last Thursday and I worked full time on a big PowerPoint project every day since. I've probably build nearly 300 slides across several decks.

    Before I uninstalled Genie, I was crashing at the rate of as many as 4-5 crashes a day before that.

    So I think the issue may go back to some commonality of function in file sharing applications like Dropbox and Carbonite as some others have mentioned.

    Thoughts?

    I've been putting off a hardware upgrade for about three years now and think it's time to go ahead and replace the old laptop I've been using as my primary production machine.

    I'm hoping with the new configuration and software install, I'll move over to that group that isn't having this read X problem.

    I'm moving into a performance machine with 16g ram. I'm also going to put the OS, MS Office and Adobe CS6 on a Solid State Drive. Crossing fingers this takes care of this problem.

    On a positive note this issue has instilled some "Save Often" tactics I've not been very diligent with in the past. (Silver lining)

    At the moment, I can only offer one *practical* suggestion:  Office 2010.

    Until Microsoft finally tracks down and fixes whatever bug(s) are causing this problem, it will continue to plague you.  Is sticking with 2013 worth the pain?  Only you can make that decision.

    I started having all of the problems described here in the last few days (random red x's, inability to save the PowerPoint file etc.). My solution was simply to not embed any Excel charts, and instead link to them. If you have embedded charts this may also be a solution for you.
