PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    Multiple Users were having this issue in our environment. They were also using Carbonite backups. After troubleshooting for a while we were able to determine that Carbonite was set up to sync/backup all day long which was causing files to be read only at random times when the Carbonite user was accessing them to sync/backup. Then with PowerPoint 2013 built in save function, it was trying to save the file randomly and would get error that the file was In use please save as a different name. Which in the end caused the corrupt PowerPoint and red x's everywhere.

    How we Resolved:

    We went into the settings of the Carbonite Backup Manager, set the system to not backup at all during the hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm which would be when the user is working. So anytime after or before the set time, it would backup and sync without issue. Since was have set this up like that, we have not heard of the issue again.

    For me once I uninstalled Genie Backup Pro, it never wiped out again after several weeks of almost daily wipeouts. 

    I went to Windows 8 on a new computer about a month ago and haven't seen a crash since.

    I don't think it's a 2013 issue, per se, because I have talked to a ton of 2013 users that haven't seen the problem. If it was a system-wide 2013 issue this would be of higher priority at MS than it is.

    I think it's a file sharing issue. A couple of the folks here said the issue went away after they uninstalled Carbonite.

    I don't know. I haven't seen the problem for a couple of months now and feeling much better about the product. Not enough better that I'm not saving my work after every slide, or more often if the slide calls for it.

    Ok - everyone DO THIS!!!! **USE PPT files for now only.  It is the only thing that works.**You can just do it to start.  

    The problem is Office 2013.  And it has nothing to do with a video card or the format of the graphics, or the operating system -  I promise. 

    This happened to me first about 4 months ago - I posted and have been in touch with MSFT as I had a new license of Office 2013.  They talked to me and tried to recreate - I gave them before and after files - but they really just want me to go away when I check back in with them.

    Then last week - it happened again Monday.  Different computer - windows 7 not 8 (I thought 8 was the prob)  I had been going along saving my file as a new name (or new number at the end every hour.  **I tried to save and it told me it was a read only file. It would not save.  I sort of forgot this was a HINT that it was about to happen.  I saved AS another name - and BANG - no images.**Then when I went back to the old file name - the images were there.   So I have the before and the after- but I cannot recreate nor do I know how it happens.

    Just an update on my status since the ongoing problems I had with this issue.

    I'm now running Windows 8.1 and using Dropbox daily. I haven't seen these issues at all on the new computer.
