PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times.

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

Thanks,

Dan

And is there another workaround known, except the one to save the file as a Office '97 file?

Just to be clear, and save a few people some pain, let me tell you that saving as an Office '97 file did not eliminate this problem for me.  It didn't seem to make a difference at all.  Eliminating any other services accessing the file at the same time - Carbonite for sure, and possibly antivirus and/or other backup - was the only fix.

install KB2837661http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2837661/which is the PowerPoint-related update (to fix part of this problem).

Well, this didn't work. When I try to install the hotfix, it is just saying that no installed packages are affected. Whatever this means. I also tried both, the x64 and x86. The error message is localized, I just briefly translated it.

So, is there a fix for this, or not?

If not, is someone still working on it?

Short answer: hotfixes are not provided via Windows Update

    Long Answer:

"Hotfixes" are potential Windows Updates that are NOT yet ready for general release. They are fixes that have been created and have gone through limited testing. They have not yet gone through the full test set that Windows Updates have to pass.  Hotfixes are often initially created in as a quick fix for VERY LARGE CUSTOMERS who spend obscene amounts of money for extra level support. How much do they pay? Enough to have a dedicated Service Representative that they can contact directly.

After the Hotfix is created it may be released to the general public as this one has but it should not be used unless you have the specific symptoms it is designed to treat, because it may break something else!

Yes, the Office internal Sync/backup tool MAY also be messed up. If you have it turned on, TURN IT OFF to see if the problem stops (ie does not happen to NEW files).

The Windows Update installed all Important Updates and every Office related optional update, so... shouldn't these be already included?

Because this error (with rId2) just happened here, all pictures disappeared.

I am not really willing to pay a subscription fee for a product line and then end up testing around with hotfixes and spend my time by tracking issues that shouldn't be any. Saving files as they are in a WYSIWYG editor is a basic functionality, therefore this bug should have top priority to be fixed.

Dropbox or other sync options can't be the issue here, the file has been saved on the desktop, except if the office internal sync/backup tool is messing it up.

I have now saved the document Office '97 compatible, but since it contains SmartArt graphics, this is not a solution.

Please keep the users at least updated about developments on this issue, even if it is a weekly reminder, that this issue still remains.
