PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    Thanks for clarifying John. It look like then, that I have the update, and it doesn't work. Just great. I have the update .1000....and still have the problem. Windows update (I don't know what Click2Run is), uploaded 2 new ones, but the PPT build number did not change. I rebooted just in case that would help, but it didn't.

    I feel your pain. This issue started for me well over a year ago.

    The first time I saw it was when a client sent me back a PowerPoint I sent to him and his reply was...

    "All the images are gone."  Thus began my nightmare.

    If this is just starting for you, consider yourself fortunate, even though that doesn't help you ready for your Wednesday presentation.

    Now, if you have your presentation and the images are all gone, running the fix won't get them back.

    I found the only solution there is reinserting the images. I don't have a clue how many hours I've put into going back and reinserting images back into broken presentations.

    My problems stopped when I changed the backup software I was using.  I've also since gone to Win 8 on a new computer and haven't seen this reoccur for a few months now.

    If the fix has done it's job, and I can't speak to whether it has nor not since my fix occurred long before MS rolled out their fix. But from what I understand this shouldn't happen to new presentation created with the latest build. If it does, I'm sure MS wants to know about it.

    Good luck with that and i wish you much success as you try to get ready for Wednesday.

    There are two install types Linda msi and Click2Run. Depending on which you have the updated version is

    EITHER 15.0.4615.1001 (or later) OR 15.04613.1000

    Micky's snapshot was the version (C2R) that you probably do not have.

    I had the update when the problem started then, because I  haven't been near wifi for a couple months and just did this PPT presentation the past week. Someone else in this thread said there there is one that ends with 1001 and another said there's one ending with 1002. I can't update just Office, as one person suggested, because these programs came with my computer I guess. I don't see the window they took a snapshot of to show me where the update is located with an option to check for Office updates. This is so not fun.
