PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    The issue you're seeing is due to PowerPoint running out of sequential memory and it's something that we're still actively trying to chase down. Unfortunately it's the kind of problem that depends a lot on your machine configuration and your content which makes it challenging to find a "one size fits all" solution.

    The best work around we can suggest in the meantime is to install 64-bit Office which will give PowerPoint substantially more memory to work with (and for most people eliminate the problem).

    Also if you can give me some more information that will help us internally:

    • Which version of Windows (and 32 or 64-bit)
    • How much memory your machine has
    • When you hit this issue how many instances of PowerPoint are running
    • Which version of PowerPoint you currently have installed

    If you're willing to share the file with us as well that'd be great.

    NOT SOLVED #2

    OK - I posted yesterday about this NOT being solved - and in that case it was when I connected to a projector.  BUT -SECOND OCCURENCE w/in a week: My admin was doing a final proofing of a document that was FINE.  And she said, "what are all these red 'X's????"  She accessed the doc via DROP BOX - which has been a point of conversation, but I understood was deemed NOT the problem.  Luckily, I had the presentation on a stick as well.  (YES I go to all kinds of extremes to make sure that I don't lose work!)  STILL NEEDS ATTENTION!!!!

    p.s.  I have the file that she opened and is X'd if anyone wants to look at it.  As far as I know, when I closed it, it was FINE.

    I connected to a projector.  AND Instantly NO images - view slide sorter - all red x"s.  Closed.  Opened again and it was ok. 

    This sounds like a different issue, since it happened on connecting to a projector and not on saving, and since closing and reopening was the fix.  In the original issue, the problem arose on (1) choosing to save and (2) getting an error message and (3) continuing to save anyway ("save as" I believe).  It's easy to believe they are related issues, though that may or may not be true. Details about your projectors, setup, and anything else about what precipitated the problem might be helpful to someonewho's working on this.  (That someone is not me, by the way - I'm just another Joe User.)

    I get in front of rooms of 20-500 regularly, and I wouldn't want this happening to me, so I'm interested in the solution too. If you find it elsewhere, please post it here too.  Thanks!

    NOT SOLVED.  I am an early poster on this blog.  And I am all updated.  AND it happened again.

    I connected to a projector.  AND Instantly NO images - view slide sorter - all red x"s.  Closed.  Opened again and it was ok.  So I was lucky.  PLUS I always have another version on a stick.  But I was in front of 20 clients in a large conference room and it was totally embarrasing.

    STILL HAPPENING MICROSOFT!!!!!!
