PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times.

1. I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2. After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3. I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again. I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper. Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
"Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

I was thinking about basic troubleshooting methods.

Since this issue seems to be only affecting a small percentage of users, perhaps we can work together to figure out what is the commonality that brings us together. Possibly there's a background process we all use that is part of the issue.

Let me spell out a few things on my system and if you see a commonality just respond to that. Maybe we can uncover a trend doing it that way.

Let's start with the Hardware (which I don't think is the issue but you never know)

Dell Inspiron N5110 - Intel I5 @2.4ghz, 8gb Ram

Pen tablet not installed

Software utilities

Backup - Genie Timeline Professional 2012

AntiVirus - Avast Internet Security

Skype - always on

Outlook - Always open

Adobe Creative Cloud - Occasionally Open

Dropbox - Always in sync

TechSmith snagit - Generally open to do screen capture

Photoshop - Often open to edit images prior to insert

Chrome browser - Not always open but sometimes is

I think that's pretty much everything I am apt to have open while working in PowerPoint.

Thanks. That may be useful as people seemed to suggest that the 64 bit version was more stable. (I have 64 bit myself)

I promise you it was not one of the MVPs. It was definitely a MS Tech Support person I was talking to.

For me, I use:

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64 bit)

MS Office 365 Home Premium (64 bit) ver: 15.0.4535.1004

I do use Dropbox most frequently, however I have stopped saving from PowerPoint into the Dropbox folder and save into local folders only. (and Google Drive and Sky Drive)

I use a mix of JPGs and PNGs. I never cut and paste directly into PPT. I always do an "Insert Image" within PPT. I even stopped doing the Drag and Drop.

When this occurred the other day the sequence was;

1- I saved the file with no problem.

2- I made an edit to the file: Changed a note. Made no other change.

3- Went to save and got the "File Read-only" error that precedes the image loss.

4- I didn't do anything else at that point other than copy the changes I just made to the clipboard, exited the file without saving, opened the file again and pasted the change back in. When I hit save this time it took it.

So if that helps, there it is.

It sounded more like it came from aPowerPoint MVP Micky which would surprise me more.

I agree it often seems like Tech Support are "out of the loop". This problem has been widely discussed here and elsewhere and they should know about it but often their experience is sometimes very general.

It's always going to be hard for the Microsoft team to fix a problem which is hard to repro but it's not the only way to spot the problem. Several people have forwarded files to me (and then to MSFT) before and after crashing which clearly show WHAT happens (just not WHY). This is going to be a help in finding the problem.

As an example I was given a before file which I was assured would die if I as much as touched it in 2013. I can do anything I want, save it to dropbox and Google Drive and back, send it across the network and back, insert slides, delete slides etc all day and nothing happens!

I'n not making any apology here for Microsoft they have been conspicuous by their absence and they shouldn't have been!

Maybe you could email me the details I asked a few posts ago.
