PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    Hi

    I have Office 2013, fully updated (through windows update) and I'm receiving this issue on PowerPoint. The preview image for the file, in the bottom explorer bar, shows the images on the opening slide in place but once you open it I get the red outlines and X error for all the images. 

    My 2010 PowerPoint never had this issue on the same PC. Is there some direct patch I can download and install to fix it as it seems the above patch hasn't worked on mine?

    Thank you Steve. I have the C2R version and it appears that I have updates being automatically updated.  

    This returns me to my problem. I must have some corruption in my file or in the program. I keep losing the images and the text. Oddly, when I copy the apparently blank or corrupted slides, they paste into a new PPT file with the text but usually not the image.  

    Right now I don't have time to analyze which images are causing the problem (I'm assuming it is the jpg images?) but I need to know: IS THERE A FIX? What is the best thing for me to do before I waste several more hours on this?  Should I change computers? Should I go back to Office 2010 (on another computer)? 

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    C2R = one of the versions of Office 2013/365 that installs itself over the internet.  All you have is a product key and a URL, no MSI file to install with, no CD/DVD or other media.

    MSI = you've got an MSI file to install from or a CD/DVD with a setup program on it.

    Unless you're on some kind of bulk licensing plan through your company, it's almost a sure thing that you have the C2R (Click To Run) version.

    I don't have my copy handy, but if memory serves, doing File | Account will tell you which version you have, and the About PowerPoint button on that screen will give you another screen that tells you the Build number.  You can also turn updates on/off from one of those screens.

    I am having the same problem and just lost hours of work for a presentation that I am desperate to finish.  

    This answer does not help me because it does not explain how to access the update and fix the problem.  

    What does any of this mean?  Can you please explain and walk me through the steps I need to take to make PPT work?
