PowerPoint 2013: Images in presentation disappear - and are replaced with 'The image part with relationship ID rId2 was not found in the file'

I've used PPT for 20 years and started using PowerPoint 2013 through Office 365 2 months ago and this has happened to me 4 times. 

1.  I create a presentation (Using copy and paste and/or insert to include pictures and other images)

2.  After working on the presentation for a while I save the file and realize all the images (except smart art) are gone and replaced with the message above.

3.  I have reinstalled PPT 2013 and it happened again.  I have documents that are 50 pages long and have had to insert new images (Hours of lost work) then 3 days later it happens again.

Not sure if it is related but I've noticed that once in a while when I try to save a document (Happens in Word and Outlook Calendar items) it tells me the file is locked and makes me save under a new name.

This is really a show stopper.  Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

I know it's been a while since our last update but that's only because we've been hard at work on a solution and doing our best to ensure that it really does eliminate the problem.

Good news - we think we've finally fixed all instances of this bug. The update is now available and how you get it will depend on your version of Office:

  • Click-2-Run: you should receive the update automatically
  • "Traditional" install: update will be available via Microsoft Update

The correct build number once the update is installed is:

  • MSI: 15.0.4613.1000
  • C2R: 15.0.4615.1001

Obviously we'd love your feedback once you've installed the update. If for some reason you continue to hit the issue please post back here and be sure to include which build of PowerPoint you have as well as any other sync/anti-virus software you may have installed.

We're deeply committed to eradicating this issue and while we've done extensive testing there's always the possibility that something slipped through the cracks.

    I'm getting "this image cannot currently be displayed" in Powerpoint AND in Word - both 2013. 

    I'm attempting to insert vector graphics - EMFs or direct copy/pastes from Enterprise Architect. 

    I noticed when I double-clicked on one of the EMFs it loaded up absolutely enormous in Paint. I zoomed out, and then it happily inserted into Word and displayed correctly. 

    I don't get problems with these document at work in Office 2010. 

    Windows 7 x64, up to date, Office 365 Subscription, up to date. 32GB RAM, i7-3930k, editing on an SSD. Outlook not running. I'd tell you what version of Word I'm running, but help->about seems to have fallen victim to the interminable Microsoft need to move everything around every couple of years. Here we go, File->Account - now why didn't I think of that? 15.0.4641.1003. 

    It does seem a little crazy that this problem has existed for over a year without a fix!

    I have generally found Office 2013 to be unstable; but, for sure, PPT is the worst. I have had the "red X" problem and the "file not found" problem until I thought I would lose my mind. Hours of work lost!! I was saving everything to Dropbox; so, in order to try something different, I just started saving all the files I was working on to my desktop. I do not have that problem when I do that.  I'm not all that technical; so, for me this seemed like a good solution until Microsoft can get its act together. When I try to update, it tells me I have the latest version of everything??

    I do have a 64bit computer and I have a 32bit version of PPT. Could that be part of the problem? Thanks.\

    tells me

    The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

     I need it - I have been experiencing the PPT images issue.  Current PPT says I am running 15.0.4629.1000 and it's supposed to be 15.0.4613.1000

    when I do Office Upates - it says that my system is up to date.  

    I posted a YEAR AGO that I had this problem and it has recently happened STILL.  

    I save my PPT as different names all the time - every 30 minutes or so - it has saved me.  But I remain vexed.  Plus it seems you all think it is all solved.  Just want to get to the update please. 

    Please tell me how to get to this update.

    Open PowerPoint then click on the File Tab. Click on Account. In the Account dialog, Click on the About PowerPoint button.
