Hmm, if nothing happens on the MSFT side, maybe I should send this analysis to CNet, ZDNet, etc... that could get their attention. ;-)
Very interesting (and disturbing!) analysis.
But a better place for this is to put it in the UserVoice forum. MS has changed it's mind and now wants bug reports, new feature requests and change requests to be posted there. If you do post it there, post a link to it back here so people can easily find it and vote support for your suggestion.

You can use the Office or Windows 10 “feedback” (*c*r*)applets but then your suggestions just fall into a black hole. You get no feedback from MS about your feedback.
A better place to submit this type of feedback the “UserVoice” forum. You can submit suggestions for “new feature requests”, “change existing feature requests” or actual “bug reports” to the forum either by “voting” and commenting on a similar existing suggestion or by creating a new suggestion for others to vote and comment on.
When MS determines there is “enough” interest they will change the status of the post to indicate if they are going to work on it or ignore it. What is “enough” interest is totally undefined. Some postings have been acted on with only a dozen or 2 votes and comments. Others (like “bring back Picture Manager” continue to be ignored even though they have several hundred votes and comments.
It is also a good idea to provide cross posted links. Put a link back to this answers.com posting on UserVoice, and add a reply here with a link to your specific posting on UserVoice.
Pointing to “uservoicpe” is a wasted effort. That is just the high level identifier with no link to MS specific subsites!

That is where MS is looking specifically for this type of user feedback to bring them back to reality from what-ever lala-land they are working in when they make these “improvements”. Comments (and votes) like these in UserVoice helped to convince MS to roll back the “phat QAT” buttons in 2016 and to at least partially undo the 2016 changes to the way the Pen input works.
Please do copy the comments you’ve made here and paste them into comments in UserVoice. Also include a link to this question. If you do make a suggestion, copy the link to the UserVoice suggestion and post it back on this question so other people with the same problem can vote for it and comment on it. The changes were made to make us fully compliant with the ISO standards for DOCX/DOCM open file formats. The capability was there in Excel 2010, too, but was implemented via policy. This causes us to go through the core Office files for protection hashes, and is in effect everywhere in Office, not just for worksheet and workbook protection. Also, in 2010 if you did implement the ISO hash protection, it would use SHA-1 hashes. In order to meet stricter security standards required by some of our customers, we moved to a default hash algorithm of SHA - 1.

I know this is an old thread, but I ran into this problem, so I started drilling into the XLSX file format and how protected worksheets are stored.
As you may know, the XLSX format is really a ZIP file with all of the Worksheet data stored as cleartext XML (unless there is a password on the entire file). The "sheet protection" exists as a cleartext <sheetprotection ... /> tag. In Excel 2010 and 2007, these tags showed the cleartext password and other information. As of 2013 (and, one would suppose, 2016), the text contains a hashed password, a salt value and the algorithm (SHA-512) used to encode things.
Here is where it gets fun: because the data exists on disk in the clear, it is trivial to open the file as a ZIP, then open each worksheet in Notepad (or any other text editor), remove the entire sheetprotect tag, and save it back to the ZIP. You have, without needing to know anything about the passwords or code behind the encryption, completely removed sheet protection and its associated passwords. This is a different matter if a password has been established on the XLSX file itself. Then nothing is in the clear on disk.
Thus, the argument that SHA-512 is being used "to be more secure" is spurious. Because the data exists on disk and in the clear (again, for workbooks without file passwords), all it does is:
But then, one could always bypass protection in a worksheet simply by copying the sheet and pasting it to a new one; that holds even when the file itself has a password. So again, worksheet protection is not securing data per se. It is preventing users from modifying the sheet data directly. That's it.
Anita (or whomever from MSFT is monitoring this board), please ask your PMs to reconsider a feature in VBA to select the old sheet protection methods. They are still there (you can see the older style sheetprotect tags in files protected under Excel 2007 or 2010) and still supported in the code base. For the sake of backward compatibility, I suspect they always will be in the code base. Please give us a programmatic way to select them. Nothing is being accomplished, other than breaking a lot of macros Excel/VBA apps people worked hard to build, by enforcing the SHA-512 method.
I suppose, in the interim, someone could write some C++ (or even VB) code to crack Excel files open as a ZIP then search for/replace all occurrences in the Sheet objects with the old style of sheetprotect tags. I suspect this is what the sites that remove sheet protection are already doing. It would be better, though, if MSFT made this accessible in VBA.

Excel 2013 performance with the stronger algorithm is absolutely horrible. With macro intensive workbooks the wait time for routines changed from "instantaneous" to "plenty of time for a coffee run".
I understand that this change is "By Design", however, if you are going to do something by design which hinders performance so negatively, there must be other changes in design to mitigate the effects. Microsoft has failed it's users and not even tried.
Security is very important. I will not argue that point. It is good to see Microsoft trying to keep us safe. I will give some suggestions on what could be done to make things easier for Excel Developers.
My suggestion for this would be that the UserInterFaceOnly option STAYS APPLIED like most other options instead of being reset each time you close the workbook. Why should you have to do this each time the workbook is opened? For security purposes you could have UserInterFaceOnly apply exclusively to those macros present in the same workbook.
These are my suggestions. I hope that Microsoft will do a better job in the future with their releases. In the 2010 release my only real complaint was their bad decision to remove the date picker. This release was far worse. It is very disheartening when a release comes out which creates serious performance issues.
