Is there anything that might help me with label controls in Excel 2007 from the Developer Tab? You have Form and Active X Label controls. Where would it be in Excel 2007 Inside Out?

    rblack40,

I think the picture you refer to is in the paragraph headed Data Form (?) and shows a form called Customers, with data from record 47 of 91. For more information on that, have a look at the Excel Help page Add, edit, find, and delete rows by using a data form - search Help under data form.

The Customers data form itself is auto-created by Excel (after clicking Form in the Quick Access Toolbar) and comprises several different types of controls, including Labels (down the left hand side) such as Customer ID, Company Name etc; Text Boxes (where the data is entered/viewed/edited); a Scroll Bar; and Buttons e.g. New, Delete, etc. You will probably be more familiar with these type of Data Forms if you use databases such as Access.

If you scroll down the Help page to which you gave a link in your last post, under the heading Summary of ActiveX Controls you'll see next to Text Box and (lower down) Label, an example of the use of Labels and Text Boxes (the word Phones is also in a Label). You can experiment with creating these from the Developer tab by clicking Insert and then clicking the icon for Label or Text Box under ActiveX controls, and then dragging a rectangle on your sheet which will become the control when you release the mouse. The controls can then be edited by right clicking them and selecting Properties e.g. for the Label Phones, in the Properties dialogue box type Phones next to Caption, click next to SpecialEffect and select 6 - fmSpecialEffectBump, click next to Font and then click the small square with ... which opens the font dialogue, and select a suitable font & size, resize the control with the border handles if necessary.

That's just a start ... Even though this is not VBA, books (and other media) on that subject will be a valuable source for learning about controls and forms because they are used so frequently with VBA (as opposed to without).

So what in the step by step process on what they did in the screenshots here with these phone numbers in the following link:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/overview-of-forms-form-controls-and-activex-controls-on-a-worksheet-HA010237663.aspx

What are the rectangular objects next to that first picture?

    rblack40,

I can assure you that the controls are very much to with VBA, which is why they are on the Developer tab (Developer being shorthand for the tools used in creating/running VBA macros), and is why Visual Basic (VB) is mentioned on the Help page you refer to e.g. "For detailed information about each property, select the property, and then press F1 to display a Visual Basic Help topic."

However, it's true that they are not used exclusively in conjunction with VBA. If you scroll to the end of the Help page, click the link to Overview of forms, Form controls, and ActiveX controls on a worksheet for more information on controls, including use with and without VBA.

This is not something that is a VBA procedure I would not think. I mean I went to Excel 2007 Help and typed in Label Controls. From what I saw on what I printed out in help with these controls it has nothing to do with VBA.

Lets say you are stting up Phone Numbers in Excel with labels for Home, Cell and Work which is what the article described. It showed pictures. Its entitled Add A Label or Text Box to a worksheet. I'm not too clear on this step by step process with this and I saw it on the Expert exam. I know I saw it.

    rblack40,

Unfortunately, despite the title, Excel 2007 Inside Out doesn't cover VBA to any great depth and (at least in the version I've looked it) doesn't refer to Label controls at all.

You'll need something like John Walkenbach's excellent introduction to VBA programming (can be previewed in Google books), or try a look at the Contextures website (http://www.contextures.com/xlUserForm01.html).
