Hi Michael,

My problem was solved after restarting/starting SOFTWARE PROTECTION service in windows 8, that service was stopped and its behaviour was Automatic(Delayed Start). So i just start that service and error gone. YOu try this as well.

The service is applicable to Microsoft products you have licensed so if ANY application is running that requires authentication, it will engage the service. Did you reboot? If yes, go to Task Manager and End Task for all Microsoft applications that you may have set to launch on startup.

    Hope that does it.

I can see that the service is in a state 'stopping' which is why the boxes are greyed out.

the fact that it is 'stopping' and not 'running' is why the licence is unable to be validated.

still doesn't answer why it does this though :(
