I keep getting the error "We're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?" when I start up word, powerpoint, excel, or any other other office program. I have tried both the quick repair and online repair but still get this error. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling both the 32 and 64 bit versions but still get this error. My computer is running Windows 7 and this is on Office 2013 Professional Plus. Please help as this problem is very annoying and takes about 10 minutes to repair before I can use any office program.

Here's how i fixed the exact error message people are reporting in this thread.

When i tried to change the compatibility mode on Winword.exe i found there were no options abvailable so i right clicked and selected Troubleshoot Compatibility.

From here select Troubleshoot Program then tick I Can't See My Problem Listed and then select Windows 8 from the next screen and apply the changes and it worked.

I should also note i had Abbyy finereader installed and the plugin was causing Word to crash so i simply opened in safe mode and disabled the plug-in.

Hope that at least helps someone.

    I ended up calling MS and I was on the phone for hours with a tech - who resolved the problem. Unfortunately, it could have been fixed in a few minutes but clearly, she was required to go through a whole protocol, which wasted hours. The problem was some files that hadn't been correctly uninstalled. after NOTHING worked (and literally after hours of troubleshooting) she said she had to uninstall the files manually. that worked.

    Meanwhile, I am now using Windows 10 with no difficulty - the problem in the first place was a login problem. I had no idea I had two passwords with the same email address. So it was horribly confusing, and then started spinning out of control.

    This does not work for me either. I keep getting this error message: "We're sorry, but Word has run into an error that is preventing it from working correctly. Word will need to be closed as a result. Would you like us to repair now?"

    This happened after my computer installed Windows 10. I have not been able to get into WORD since. I have run out of ideas. (I am using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013.)  Any ideas?

    Hi --

    I am unable to open WORD, even in Safe mode.  At least, using the directions at Microsoft.com.  Could you explain exactly how you did that?

    Also, I do not know how to change the compatibility mode for Winword.exe. Can you explain the steps for that process?
