Word for Mac 2011 keeps crashing every time I work with a document, relatively large (50Mb), on MacBook Pro. When I work at the same document, in iMac, there is no problem. What could it be?

I have a MacBook air & the above is happening to me. My whole system crashed ...I had to reformat my disc & get a new microsoft:mac downloaded today.

I just started working on my doc & it has happened again... "There is an unrecoverable disk error on file. The disk you're working on has a media problem that prevents Word from using it....try formatting another disc or save the doc to another disk."

The only way I can get out of this is shut the computer down & I will lose my changes to the doc.x

Several days ago, I started having the same kind of problems as described above: trying to save a 30 meg file and getting an error message about "read-only" and renaming the file. This morning, I opened a blank document, inserted the entire 30 Meg file into the blank document. The formatting changed somewhat but so far, I have changed the file and saved it 7 or 8 times without any problems. If the problem recurs, I will report back.

I now check the test doc first so that a crash of the control doc doesn't ruin the test.

Latest TMBU 7:20 am.  Attempt to save test doc successful

3/4/2012: 7:39 am. Latest TMBU 7:20 am. Library folder excluded from TMBU. Attempt to save Control doc unsuccessful: “Cannot save while file is in use by….” Rename doc and reestablish location, save to folder, Word Work File L_768924244.tmp resides in folder. 

Note: Excluding the Original test document folder from TMBU for the test doc seems to eliminate the failure.  Continuing to let TMBU the original Control doc folder while excluding AutoRecovery, /Preferences, and /Library from TMBU have not proved successful for the control doc.

I will back-up the doc internally within Word, i.e. make a back-up copy and begin to manually exclude the original large doc files until MS finds a solution.

3/2/2012, 3:29pm: Latest TMBU 2:48pm.  Attempt to save control doc (after preference file excluded but not saved) unsuccessful – “This file is read only. To save a copy…” Unable to save to original folder, unable to save to desktop (2X), Can save Control doc to a new folder and drag to original folder. Immediate attempt to save again results in same routine: “Unable to save….” “This file is Read-Only…” Can’t save to original folder, Desktop, latest folder, must create a new folder to successfully save doc.

Latest TMBU 3:49. Attempt to save test doc successful.

3/3/2012: 10:07am.  Latest TMBU 9:47am (preference folder excluded). Attempt to save control doc failed, message: “There is an unrecoverable disk error on file. The disk you’re working on has a media problem…” OK.  Spinning disk icon, HD at full speed, Word locked up – Force quit: “you have forced Word to quit” Report. “You quit Word because of a problem” OK. Restart Word, Control doc resurfaces as a read-only doc, latest data lost. Can’t save to original folder, save to desktop and drag to original folder.

Attempt to save test doc unsuccessful due to Word hang and forced shutdown.

Next I'll exclude the folder /Library per your recommendation.
