Word for Mac 2011 keeps crashing every time I work with a document, relatively large (50Mb), on MacBook Pro. When I work at the same document, in iMac, there is no problem. What could it be?

I have had the same problems for about 10 months. As a result I've had to reformat my HDD twice, including one clean format. I've installed Office 2011 from two different sources, but the problem keeps coming back. This happens only with large Word documents. I have tried all of the above solutions but none has worked so far. Recently the most common error message has been:

"You cannot save while the file is in use by another process. Try saving the file with a new name"

After that the file I was working on is deleted completely! The fans start turning, the HDD becomes hot and a few minutes later everything crashes. It's a regular scenario. I have tried saving to different folders, turning off auto-recovery, and turning off time machine. Same result.

Is the problem coming from Word, and if so, can Microsoft take it into account, as suggested by NKSimmons?

Or could these be hardware failures?

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I think the problem lies within the Office: mac2011 because when I was using the earlier version, whatever it was, an older one circa 2008, I typed fine and saved easily.

I'm having the same issues, but I can give you some comfort that 2008 is no better.  It started happening to me with 2008 so I went out and bought 2011 in the hope it would resolve the problem, but to no avail.  I echo the sentiments of many that it makes Word almost unusable.  I have lost count of the number of times I have lost data and had to restart (and restart the thought process which is even more frustrating!).

It would be good if MS could acknowledge the problem and make an official comment rather than relying on people accessing the forums and getting half baked suggestions which may or may not help.  In fairness Apple could just have easily moved the goal posts (actually most likely given it suddenly started happening while I was using a 2008 version of Office which had been totally stable).

I had a feeling that the problem was slightly better when using my MacBook Air directly rather than via a big screen / Thunderbold with the lid shut.  I too have Time Machine (which has been no help in recovering the lost work either!).

When I am in Office: mac 2011 and typing with word, the entire program crashes and my MacBook Pro goes dark as well as my large Apple monitor.  

I have to manually shut down the MacBrook Pro and then manually restart it.

This happens when I am typing and not when I am saving.

I have used the utility disk several times, to no avail.

I am having this same problem currently, using OS X Mountain Lion and a MacBook Pro (13", early 2011).

I recently downloaded the July 2012 update to Office but that did not resolve this issue.

Why has this not been fixed yet? It makes Word almost non-functional...
