How do I turn off the Research paine when I open Word?

You will get a close symbol on the top right corner of the Research Pane, you can click on the close symbol and turn it off.

 Or you can click on the icon for Research Pane on the Toolbar at the top.

    It may be hard to see, but it is happening and it is extremely annoying. I still have not seen an answer to the initial question on how to turn this useless feature off. Now that would be helpful.

    I will echo that this is an amazingly annoying and obstructive problem. The manner in which Microsoft attempted to cram functionality on to the mousepad and once again over-engineer something that is at its core a very simple function, while also eliminating drag & drop support (how on earth is this a good idea), is honestly almost enough for me to give up on Microsoft completely after more than 20 years and a successful career using and supporting with their consumer and enterprise products.

    I am sorry this is not super constructive feedback but really the Surface series has so much promise, but in typical Microsoft fashion they tried to do too much instead of keeping things simple and usable.

    Maybe the Surface 3 holds promise...but that seems to be all we get from Microsoft consumer products these days, the promise of things being better in the next version while they keep missing the mark - by a lot.

    This is the most obnoxious problem. I am having issues at the moment with this. Please fix this someday, one of these years.

    I have also had this problem off and on.  First, call the Microsoft Office technical helpline. There is an update that switches the research pane off that they are perfectly aware of (worked first time!). Unfortunately, with regular updates, the problem will return; in which case, call the MS helpline, which will give you another update to correct the problem in the previous update. Apparently this is a well-known problem which they thought they fixed, then didn't, then thought they did again, then didn't, now think they did again. If you are tech savvy (which I am not), you can run the latest updates yourself and hope it is the one where they fixed the research pane issue, rather than the one they didn't. FYI - research pane problem earlier today- ran updates
