How do I turn off the Research paine when I open Word?

You will get a close symbol on the top right corner of the Research Pane, you can click on the close symbol and turn it off.

 Or you can click on the icon for Research Pane on the Toolbar at the top.

 If this does not resolve the issue, follow the basic Troubleshooting steps provided in the article given below:

    I have contacted the Word team about this and received immediate follow-up. This reply is addressed to everyone who has posted in this thread.

    First, if you want to disable the Research pane entirely (this will make it entirely unavailable, which is what some of you say you want), then here's how:

    1. Press Alt-F11 to open the VB Editor.
    2. Press Ctrl-G to open the Immediate Window.
    3. Type (or paste) this line and press Enter:

    Application.CommandBars("Research").Enabled = False

    For those of you who have reported problems with typing, copying/pasting, etc.:

    The team was unable to reproduce this behavior but guesses it might be a keyboard issue. They therefore ask these questions:

    1. Does the Research pane pop up even without editing the document via keyboard?
    2. What exactly were you doing immediately before seeing the Research pane pop up?

    I would also ask the following questions:

    1. Are you using a laptop with the touchpad enabled?
    2. Have you assigned a different keyboard shortcut for the Research pane? (This was one of the suppositions of the Word team, which I consider wildly unlikely; it does not seem possible to change or disable the Alt+click shortcut through the UI.)

    My issue is not how I activated the researching function in a Word document.  The issue is - once activated, the "x" button would not turn the research pane off.   It continued to turn itself back on at the first attempt to type anything else in the Word document.   

    There's obviously a bug loose in the programming.  I had to go to the control panel, add remove program function, and click repair.  That seems to have fixed the problem - for the last several hours anyway.

    Unless you're inadvertently "clicking" by touching the touchpad on a laptop, it's hard to see how you can inadvertently get Alt+click while typing.

    Same problem with the Word program packaged with Microsoft 365 in 2013!   Not glad to see Microsoft ignoring this major annoyance.
