Select the Page Layout menu option.  All the way to the right you'll see "Align"  The "View Gridlines" setting is in there.  This was driving me batty for a while.

In Microsoft Office Starter 2010:

"Page Layout" Tab >

"Align" Button is on the far, top, right hand side >

Drop-Down Menu - Uncheck "View Gridlines" - Second option from the bottom >

Done.

It sounds to me as if you have just switched to Draft view. If that's what you want, fine, but if you switch back to Print Layout view, the gridlines will still be there (gridlines aren't displayed in Draft view because you can't draw in Draft view). Clearing the Gridlines check box on the View tab is the correct way to remove them.
