How do you limit the header and footer to only the first page of a document?

I ant the header and footer to only appear on the first page.

Now it appears on every page OR on every odd page.

You need to enable "Different first page" and put the header and footer content only in the First Page Header and First Page Footer. If you see the header/footer on every page, then you are putting it in the primary Header/Footer. If you're seeing it only on odd pages, then you have enabled "Different odd and even" which makes the primary header/footer the Odd Page Header/Footer.

My first thought would be IF you have multiple section breaks, you have to UNLINK the Headers and Footers from the previous sections.

    The vast majority of documents use letterhead on page 1, and blank on the rest; why does Word make this format so difficult?

    It is not difficult. You just have to learn to do it.

    Uhm, it was marked as the answer four years ago by the original poster because it answered the question that was asked. Unfortunately, it does not seem to have answered your question.

    You enable "Different first page" by checking that option in the header and footer tools tab. You see this contextual tab by editing a header or footer. For more, see Header/Footer Settings Recap.
