How do you limit the header and footer to only the first page of a document?

I ant the header and footer to only appear on the first page.

Now it appears on every page OR on every odd page.

You need to enable "Different first page" and put the header and footer content only in the First Page Header and First Page Footer. If you see the header/footer on every page, then you are putting it in the primary Header/Footer. If you're seeing it only on odd pages, then you have enabled "Different odd and even" which makes the primary header/footer the Odd Page Header/Footer.

My first thought would be IF you have multiple section breaks, you have to UNLINK the Headers and Footers from the previous sections.

    Thanks. One has to admit the procedure is clumsy. The blinkered techies at Microsoft seem to think that no one ever writes a letter longer than one page. Let us hope they are able to recognise the glitch and fix it before long.

    The blinkered techies at Microsoft have made an incredibly complex program as easy to use for beginners as possible. They do assume that people using the program regularly will spend some time learning how to use the features they need. The feature for having a different header for the first page has been around for at least 20 years in every version of Word that I've used. It is probably easier to find in the Ribbon versions.

    I'm assuming that is in response to DeanH's post on August 10, 2011:

    No need to assume. If you click on the "In reply to" link, the post being replied to is displayed. But in any case, you are beating your head against a stone because RD3WT is not listening and won't be convinced. He writes, "There is an obvious and logical need for facilitating a 'home-made' (for want of a better word) template to omit replicating Headers or Footers ad infinite after page one." I would agree that there is an obvious and logical need, which is why the "Different First Page" switch exists and, in Word 2007 and above, has been made even more accessible.
