How do you limit the header and footer to only the first page of a document?

I ant the header and footer to only appear on the first page.

Now it appears on every page OR on every odd page.

You need to enable "Different first page" and put the header and footer content only in the First Page Header and First Page Footer. If you see the header/footer on every page, then you are putting it in the primary Header/Footer. If you're seeing it only on odd pages, then you have enabled "Different odd and even" which makes the primary header/footer the Odd Page Header/Footer.

My first thought would be IF you have multiple section breaks, you have to UNLINK the Headers and Footers from the previous sections.

    The vast majority of documents use letterhead on page 1, and blank on the rest; why does Word make this format so difficult?

    You have to enable Different First Page and put the content only in the First Page Header/Footer, leaving the primary header/footer empty. See http://WordFAQs.mvps.org/HeaderFooter.htm.

    I tried that, but it deleted the header completely from the first page and kept it on every following page.
