How do you limit the header and footer to only the first page of a document?

I ant the header and footer to only appear on the first page.

Now it appears on every page OR on every odd page.

You need to enable "Different first page" and put the header and footer content only in the First Page Header and First Page Footer. If you see the header/footer on every page, then you are putting it in the primary Header/Footer. If you're seeing it only on odd pages, then you have enabled "Different odd and even" which makes the primary header/footer the Odd Page Header/Footer.

My first thought would be IF you have multiple section breaks, you have to UNLINK the Headers and Footers from the previous sections.

    To correct my typographical error: I meant, of course, ad infinitum, not "ad infinite".

    That is what I meant but perhaps failed to make clear enough--a home-made template--although, if you read back, you will see that is the context of my initial query. There is an obvious and logical need for facilitating a "home-made" (for want of a better word) template to omit replicating Headers or Footers ad infinite after page one. And that is why I refer to blinkered techies failing to accommodate that obvious and logical need.

    There are thousands, if not millions of things that Micrsoft could have created templates for, but then, finding the one that You want would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

    However, there is NOTHING stopping you from making such a template yourself.

    Start with a blank document, go to the Page Layout tab of the ribbon, launch the Page Setup dialog, go to the Layout tab, check the box for "Different first page", click on OK, then use File>Save As and save the document as a template.

    Then, when you start a document from that template and use Insert>Header>Edit Header, this is what you will see:

    ready for you to insert whatever it is that you want in the header of the first page only.
