How do you limit the header and footer to only the first page of a document?

I ant the header and footer to only appear on the first page.

Now it appears on every page OR on every odd page.

You need to enable "Different first page" and put the header and footer content only in the First Page Header and First Page Footer. If you see the header/footer on every page, then you are putting it in the primary Header/Footer. If you're seeing it only on odd pages, then you have enabled "Different odd and even" which makes the primary header/footer the Odd Page Header/Footer.

My first thought would be IF you have multiple section breaks, you have to UNLINK the Headers and Footers from the previous sections.

    There are thousands, if not millions of things that Micrsoft could have created templates for, but then, finding the one that You want would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

    However, there is NOTHING stopping you from making such a template yourself.

    Start with a blank document, go to the Page Layout tab of the ribbon, launch the Page Setup dialog, go to the Layout tab, check the box for "Different first page", click on OK, then use File>Save As and save the document as a template.

    Then, when you start a document from that template and use Insert>Header>Edit Header, this is what you will see:

    ready for you to insert whatever it is that you want in the header of the first page only.

    Sorry, but, to my mind, that is the glitch. MS ought to provide or allow a template with the option of NOT repeating a Header (or Footer) on every page after the first.

    There is no "glitch," and I'm not sure what you're considering one. That you have to display the header to get the Header & Footer Tools? In previous versions, the Header & Footertoolbar was displayed when the header was opened (which was a lot harder in those versions). That you have to use "Different first page" to get a different header on the first page? Well, the point of a header is to repeat on every page. Having this option (which is also available from the Layout tab of Page Setup when you're not in the header) allows you to have the first page different. Word has always worked this way. Word has very robust and flexible tools for varying headers and footers (not just with "Different first page" but also with "Different odd and even"). You just need to learn how to use them; see http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/headerfooter.htm.
