Issue:

After installing Office 2010 SP1, you may receive random crashes when opening objects in certain databases and when trying to open the VBA window in those databases.  If you look in the event viewer the crash info may look similar to the following:

Faulting application: msaccess.exe

Version: 14.0.6024.1000

Stamp: 4d83e4fc

faulting module: vbe7.dll

version: 7.0.16.19

stamp: 4d430aec

Workaround:

UPDATE: Microsoft is aware of the issue and has scheduled a fix to the VBE7.dll in the October 2011 Cumulative Update.  You can workaround the issue by performing the following steps to decompile and recompile the database.

1.      Make a copy / backup of your database.

2.      On the problematic machine decompile the database by running the following from a Run command line:  <path to database file> /decompile ex. C:\test.accdb  /decompile

3.      Close the database.

4.      Open the database again normally.

In addition to this, if you experience the crash please send the error report when prompted to do so after the crash.

Hey Everyone,

It looks like the hotfix for this issue has been released and can be downloaded from the link below:

Description of the Access 2010 hotfix package (Vbe7-x-none.msp): October 25, 2011 - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2596585

In addition to this, KB 2625046 which describes this issue will also be updated to point to the fix above.

    Hi Johnmahoney,

Based upon the version of the VBE7.dll file in your crash log, it doesn’t appear you have the hotfix installed.  The crash log is showing 7.0.16.19 for your VBE7.dll and the updated version in the hotfix would be 7.0.16.25.  I would try downloading the hotfix again and make sure you download the fix for the bit version of Access you are running.  If you are running Office 2010 32 bit, then you will want to install the X86 (32 bit) fix.  After you download the fix, you will also want to make sure you run the .exe file that you download to actually install it.

    Hi Jeff,

As mentioned in a previous post, the hotfix site detects the bit version of your operating system and presents you with a hotfix in that bit version.  You most likely are running a 64 bit operating system and have the 32 bit version of Office 2010 installed (which is common and recommended).  In order to get the proper bit version of the fix, you can do the following when you open the KB that discussed the hotfix:

Description of the Access 2010 hotfix package (Access-x-none.msp): October 25, 2011

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2596585

    1.      In the upper left corner of the article click “View and request hotfix downloads

    2.      If prompted, click the “I Accept” button for the Agreement for Microsoft Services.

    3.      On the Microsoft Support Hotfix Request page, click “Select hotfix

    4.      Click the link “Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages…

    5.      If you installed the x32-bit version of Office, select the “x86” Platform version of the fix.

If you installed the x64-bit version of Office, select the “x64” Platform version of the fix.

To check the platform version of your Microsoft Office 2010 application, follow these steps:

    1. Open your application.

    2. Click the File tab

    3. Click Help

On the right side, you will see a version number in the following format:

    14.0.####.#### (##- bit)

If the application version number ends with “(32-bit)”, select the hotfix version that contains “x86” in its number.

If the application version number is followed by “(64-bit)”, select the hotfix version that contains “x64” in its number.

Note that the Hotfix site detects your Internet Explorer and operating system platform version and automatically chooses the version of the hotfix based on the version of Internet Explorer and your operating system rather than on the version of the Microsoft Office 2010 application that you want to fix. If your Internet Explorer and operating system platform version (x64 vs. x32) is different from your application version, you need to make sure to select the correct platform version of the hotfix for your application.

    4.      Provide your e-mail address, enter the characters as shown and click “Request hotfix”

    5.      You will receive an email from hotfix@microsoft.com that provides you the link to the fix. Click the link.

    6.      Click “Run” when prompted.

    7.      Click “Continue” in the Microsoft Self-Extractor window.

    8.      Type the name of a folder or browse to the folder in which you want to save the hotfix and click “OK”.

    9.      Click “OK” to the message that All files were successfully unzipped.

    10.  Navigate to the folder where you saved the fix. Double click on the file you just extracted. The file name should include the number of the Knowledge Base article that described the fix.

If you attempt to install the 64-bit version of the Microsoft Office fix on a machine that has the 32-bit version of Office, you will receive a message similar to:

“There are no products affected by this package installed on this system”

    I hope that helps.

    Best Regards,

    Nathan O.
