Access 2010 SP1 – You receive random crashes in certain database or when opening the VBA window in those databases after installing Office 2010 SP1

Issue:

After installing Office 2010 SP1, you may receive random crashes when opening objects in certain databases and when trying to open the VBA window in those databases.  If you look in the event viewer the crash info may look similar to the following:

Faulting application: msaccess.exe

Version: 14.0.6024.1000

Stamp: 4d83e4fc

faulting module: vbe7.dll

version: 7.0.16.19

stamp: 4d430aec

Workaround:

UPDATE: Microsoft is aware of the issue and has scheduled a fix to the VBE7.dll in the October 2011 Cumulative Update.  You can workaround the issue by performing the following steps to decompile and recompile the database.

1.      Make a copy / backup of your database.

2.      On the problematic machine decompile the database by running the following from a Run command line:  <path to database file> /decompile ex. C:\test.accdb  /decompile

3.      Close the database.

4.      Open the database again normally.

In addition to this, if you experience the crash please send the error report when prompted to do so after the crash.

It looks like the hotfix for this issue has been released and can be downloaded from the link below:

    I cannot even begin to tell you how much time I have wasted or all the things I have done during the last two months trying to resolve some of my Access 2010 issues. As I am sure is the case with every single person who has posted here.

    Please, I have had to postpone a deadline for a project over a month now - every time hoping and praying that I would find some type of solution. It is soooooooo unproductive, unprofessional, and quite simply humiliating!

    I don't know why on earth I only discovered this thread tonight but here I am.

    Windows 7 64 bit

    Microsoft Office Professional 2010 32 bit - which has been repaired and reinstalled quite a number of times

    HP Pavillion dv7 - with fingerprint recognition deactivated

    Running Access permanently now as Administrator

    I am no longer prompted to send an error report after a crash - it just stops.

    Bill,

    Thank you for the shortcut suggestion. For some reason I cannot run anything from a folder that I created myself, whether there are spaces or no spaces. The only way in which I was able to decompile my database was with the shortcut.

    Burning a lot of time here too...  Building new local database (on my desktop) to replace crashed shared database.  Creating a new unbound form with buttons to fire code.  It's painfully slow waiting to switch between design and form views.  Need to get this DB into production asap.

    Sadly I installed Office  Pro 2010 and the results brought me here - same issue.  However, I have not applied SP1

    Version: 14.0.4760.1000 (32-bit)

    OS: Vista

    Hardware: 64bit

    EDIT:  Clicked Additional info link and MS-Access is 14.0.4750.100

    ANY database opened gets the "...VBA project contained in it cannot be read...." message.  INCLUDING MS-Access example .ACCDB databases!  My job has had 2010 installed now for a year and never experienced it at work.  Now, on my computer with my purchased copy, sadly, I get the error.

    MS Office Pro 2007 and MS Access 2003 were installed prior to the upgrade.  Thinking the older versions were the culprit, uninstalled any leftovers, uninstalled MSO2010, reinstalled, and the problem did not go away.

    /decompile does not help.

    Created a NEW database, then clicked Ctrl-G, and the error occurred again.

    While my programming at home isn't my bread-winner like most here, it is preventing me from getting side-work payments for projects that were near ready for release.  Now I can't do anything unless I uninstall MSO2010 and put MSO2007 and MSA2003 back on?  Nuts...
