Access 2010 SP1 – You receive random crashes in certain database or when opening the VBA window in those databases after installing Office 2010 SP1

Issue:

After installing Office 2010 SP1, you may receive random crashes when opening objects in certain databases and when trying to open the VBA window in those databases.  If you look in the event viewer the crash info may look similar to the following:

Faulting application: msaccess.exe

Version: 14.0.6024.1000

Stamp: 4d83e4fc

faulting module: vbe7.dll

version: 7.0.16.19

stamp: 4d430aec

Workaround:

UPDATE: Microsoft is aware of the issue and has scheduled a fix to the VBE7.dll in the October 2011 Cumulative Update.  You can workaround the issue by performing the following steps to decompile and recompile the database.

1.      Make a copy / backup of your database.

2.      On the problematic machine decompile the database by running the following from a Run command line:  <path to database file> /decompile ex. C:\test.accdb  /decompile

3.      Close the database.

4.      Open the database again normally.

In addition to this, if you experience the crash please send the error report when prompted to do so after the crash.

    I reinstalled SP1 Monday and applied the hotfix.  So far, so good!  All the databases that crashed on me previously are working great now.

    As mentioned and just to be clear, this is not SP2, it is a hotfix that will most likely be included with SP2.

    Issue that this hotfix package fixes

    Assume that you open a database that contains Visual Basic for Application (VBA) code. In this situation, Microsoft Access 2010 may crash when you change the database. Note This issue occurs after you apply Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

    The paragraph above, which is also in the article, simply states what causes the issue to begin with.  The prerequisites section is what you need to look at to see what needs to be installed before installing the hotfix. 

    Prerequisites

    To apply this hotfix package, you must have Microsoft Office 2010.

    The files you are putting on your machine will have a higher build then the files in SP1 and should be left alone when SP1 is installed.  To test, this, simply install the hotfix on a machine without SP1 and look at the version number of VBE7.dll on your machine.  Then install SP1 and once again take a look at the VBE7.dll file on your machine.

    Thanks for the info / steps to find it.  I would assume the release column would be the actual service pack the cumulative update / specific hotfix would be a part of when that service pack is released.

    You asked re Release SP2 location. This is on the download page at the URL shown below (see 'Release' column on copy below). It is also noted that the SP2 fix is only intended to apply to SP1 systems (see copied advisory sections below).  As you will understand, after this extended saga we have lost a certain amount of trust in Microsoft's team, and we request that you specifically check with the Fix team and confirm that we should install the SP2 fixwithout first installing SP1 again.
