Access 2010 SP1 – You receive random crashes in certain database or when opening the VBA window in those databases after installing Office 2010 SP1

Issue:

After installing Office 2010 SP1, you may receive random crashes when opening objects in certain databases and when trying to open the VBA window in those databases.  If you look in the event viewer the crash info may look similar to the following:

Faulting application: msaccess.exe

Version: 14.0.6024.1000

Stamp: 4d83e4fc

faulting module: vbe7.dll

version: 7.0.16.19

stamp: 4d430aec

Workaround:

UPDATE: Microsoft is aware of the issue and has scheduled a fix to the VBE7.dll in the October 2011 Cumulative Update.  You can workaround the issue by performing the following steps to decompile and recompile the database.

1.      Make a copy / backup of your database.

2.      On the problematic machine decompile the database by running the following from a Run command line:  <path to database file> /decompile ex. C:\test.accdb  /decompile

3.      Close the database.

4.      Open the database again normally.

In addition to this, if you experience the crash please send the error report when prompted to do so after the crash.

It looks like the hotfix for this issue has been released and can be downloaded from the link below:

In addition to this, KB 2625046 which describes this issue will also be updated to point to the fix above.

    I jumped through all the hoops to get the hotfix, received the email with the link, and the link's response is:  The network path was not found.

    hhmmm . . . hotfix installed . . I did reboot - clean out all other stuff that was running.

    15mins later . . .

    took a copy of my major system FE file . . opened that (OK) and  compacted it . .

    After compact  - switched to design mode on main menu . . took a minute . . but got in and compiled the VBA code . . no problem . .

    clicked on a subform - OK Clicked again to get inside subform . . watched the blue donut for a minute before I started typing this . . .Ok can now click on fields inside the subform . . have the donut spinning - cause I clicked the mainform . . pause typing while I wait for response . . .ZZZZZZ

    2 minutes .yeh !  . oops donut is back - clicked on View Code . .

    Will copy this to flash drive and see what happens on home PC without SP1 installed

    So far  - on average each click is taking about 2 mins . .

    Hope yous guys have better luck

    Bit sneeky though . .. releasing the info in the middle of the night ..  or pre-dawn attack on the the Poms . .

    But its late afternoon here in Aus . .

    So will see what happens . . have installed hotfix and will try some of the DBs that were playing up . .

    Great.  Thanks for the update Nathan.

    Will this hotfix apply to the Access 2010 runtime version as well?

    It sounds like this (as with all hotfixes) is to hold us over for the time being.  I hate to ask, but is there any ETA of anything (via Windows Update, Office SP2) that we can look ahead towards for those of us flexible enough to delay a release of our upcoming Access 2010 ap?  I have a scheduled release of mine on Jan 1st and would delay if I knew of a nice official update shortly thereafter.

    Thanks again for being a standup guy to a sometimes hostile crowd!
