Access 2010 SP1 – You receive random crashes in certain database or when opening the VBA window in those databases after installing Office 2010 SP1

Issue:

After installing Office 2010 SP1, you may receive random crashes when opening objects in certain databases and when trying to open the VBA window in those databases.  If you look in the event viewer the crash info may look similar to the following:

Faulting application: msaccess.exe

Version: 14.0.6024.1000

Stamp: 4d83e4fc

faulting module: vbe7.dll

version: 7.0.16.19

stamp: 4d430aec

Workaround:

UPDATE: Microsoft is aware of the issue and has scheduled a fix to the VBE7.dll in the October 2011 Cumulative Update.  You can workaround the issue by performing the following steps to decompile and recompile the database.

1.      Make a copy / backup of your database.

2.      On the problematic machine decompile the database by running the following from a Run command line:  <path to database file> /decompile ex. C:\test.accdb  /decompile

3.      Close the database.

4.      Open the database again normally.

In addition to this, if you experience the crash please send the error report when prompted to do so after the crash.

    Went to work tonight on a project that was working fine Friday and now it has problems. Cannot delete or rename any control on any form (they all have event procedures), and I cannot delete or rename any form as well.  I am several weeks into a very large project and this is starting to really scare me.  Really (really!) hope you guys fix this soon.  I recent installed SP!, and then uninstalled it cause of too many problems.  So apparently this "version" is not stable either.

    I do have a work around that I do not think anyone has mentioned - most folks probably don't have this as an option at all.  Stumbled on it in desperation.

     We have a Win 2008 server with Office on it, and that version has not been upgraded to SP1.  Also - and this is interesting - it is the 64 bit version. I am running the 32 bit version on my development machine.  I can copy the "broken" accdb up to the server and everything works.  I compact/repair it there, and then copy it back to my machine, and all the problems are cleared up. 

    My work around has saved my butt twice since I discovered it.  Just passing on my concerns and my observations.

    One more thing @ Nathan. if you've fixed the Sp1 issue then for gods sake tell us where to download it from so we can install it on our customers machines and know it's done instead of hoping they have updates turned on. Why be so evasive about it?

    After a decade of developing in Access and more recently months of head scratching and wondering what on earth the Access Team are playing at I've decided to give-up and switch to another platform before I start losing customers and it's to late. 

    If Ms carries on like this then Access RIP, there's a lot of other players out there just itching for this sort of opportunity. Ms needs to start pulling it's finger out of its ears and start listening to its captive followers.

    Amen, brother!

    Has anyone looked at LightSwitch?  I have not, but some are calling Access.Net.

    I'd love to hear anyone's input on LS.
