My list of Recent Documents is not showing up in either my Task Bar or Start Menu.  I have opened Word Options / Advanced, and selected to display 15 recent documents, but they're not showing up.  They used to show up, but suddenly not anymore.  My Excel still shows its recent documents, but Word is no longer showing them.  Please help.  Thanks! :)

Check the recent document list within word application. If its fine then there might some corruption in the recent items stored in ‘AutomaticDestinations’ folder.

To resolve and fix the issue, follow these steps:

1)   Browse to the location mentioned : %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations

Note: the folder ‘AutomaticDestinations’ is hidden

2)   Delete all the files whose size is 1MB or more.

Note: If you cannot find any file sized 1MB or more then delete all the files. This will eventually remove the Jump Lists’ recent items for all the applications. The recent items on the Jump Lists will be re-added as the program is been used. If you delete all the files then ensure that the applications are pinned again to the taskbar.

the fix is very simple:

  1. right click on the start button
  2. click on properties
  3.  task bar and start menu properties shows
  4. click on start menu
  5. place a check mark in the two boxes in the privacy section.  (store and display recently opened programs/items etc...)

Note that %appdata% is only a system variable that "links" to the Application Data folder whose exact location depends on the operating system. You should be able to open it via the Run dialog box (hold the Windows logo key and press R to display that dialog).

Here are the responses that resolved my problem.  I put them in order (1...., 2....., 3.....).  Start at #1, and read down thru #3.  There is helpful info in each #1-#3 that builds on itself.  Ultimately it was #3 that resolved the problem.  Good luck. Let me know if it doesn't work.

1........

Press WinKey and type (or copy/paste)

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations< /FONT>

Identify files that are comparatively larger in size than the rest of the file, such as files that have file size of 1 MB or more.

Delete the abnormal file(s).

Tip: If you do not want to retain the Jump Lists’ recent items history on all applications, just delete all the automaticDestinations-ms files in the folder.

The recent items functionality on Jump Lists will be restored. The recent items on the Jump Lists will be re-added as the program is been used. However, do note that the solution does not restore the previously pinned items. So user will have to pin new items again.

Now one more step I did of 'Fooling the Tool' clinched it!

I have a full solution now.

As a final step, right click on Office Starter pinned to the Taskbar. Out of the list that comes up, right click on the 'Microsoft Office Starter' link that lies just above the 'Unpin this program' option and select Properties.

    In the Properties->Shortcut tab, change Target & Start In values from Office Starter values available (for e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler & C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.exe) to Office 2010 values like Target = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\WINWORD.EXE" & Start In = "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14" in Win7.

If you want it perfect, also change the shortcut name in Properties->General tab from Microsoft Office Starter to Microsoft Office 2010.

Now the 'new Office Starter' pinned to your Taskbar works exactly like an Office 2010 pinned and displays all the recent files & also allow you to pin whatever you want!

Only issue now is that only Office Starter app in the Start->Programs asks you if you want to 'unpin from taskbar' & not 2010 app (remember we changed the target but OS thinks its the Starter app!). That's a very minor issue & am ignoring it for now, as around 16-20hrs of my productive time has already been spent trying to fix this.

Thanks to the tips given by everyone!

Whew,my issue is solved - hope it helps some of you too. All the best!

If Microsoft CustCare is listening, can we pl have an option to give some handson help/support to customers via system takeover or over Helpdesk phone guidance support to get these Win OS/Office issues resolved. It will go a long way in improving customer loyalty to the MS brand. Spending hours to crack such things does leave a bitter aftertaste about the organization to it's customers! Can't blame when some of us lose patience & starts badmouthing the organization that has done a key contrbution of easy computing to the society!
